Just a quick question, there is a park near my home and in it is a fenced off area that is put aside for dogs to be allowed off the lead and run around. I would love to bring my Staffordshire BT there but what are the restrictions for an RB?

Is he allowed off lead with a muzzle on?
Is he even allowed off the lead there?

Unfortunately you should keep your RB dog on the lead and be muzzled. That is the law but most people don't follow that law. If your dog is well socialised and is under control (has a good recall) then I guess if you are confident you could take a chance. Personally I like to bring my dog to secluded areas where I am unlikely to meet other people. RB owners have to make a greater effort to provide a happy environment for their dog and we get no assistance from Local Authorites when they do provide dog parks.

Just remember that if your dog is involved in any situation it will be the one at fault as it should have been on a lead and muzzled. I don't agree with it but you have to protect your dog while in public.

Told them there dog was supposed to be under control and that they were lucky it was my Staff they met and not some scumbag who would not respect the laws regarding the breed!!!

I bring him to a secluded area with loads of space once a day, but the park would be lovely, but the law is the law and I am not going to risk anything happening!!!

This is SI 442/1998 Control Of Dogs Regulations 1998. You might even find an exemption to suit your needs in article 7 .

    Hope this is helps.

I really feel for you op. It is such a pity if you have a well behaved dog that it can't mingle. Personally I think it frustrates dogs to be kept on a lead if all thy want to do is play. I meet a few RBs on my walk with my lab cross and I love meeting them off the lead and If my girl is happy to meet them too that's great! What frustrates me is the the owners of non RB dogs who don't care what their dogs are doing or who they are annoying. There is an older woman who walks my route with a rottie, the dog is the most placid sweet dog who just Walks along side her owner. When there is no one around the lady takes the lead off but once she sees someone approaching the dog goes back on the lead. It's terrible to see her have to do that as really there should be no need. The dog is completely non aggressive. I always shout down to her to say it's only me and to leave the dog off. I like to cuddle the dog and say hello and the 2 dogs like to say hello too off the lead. It really is the most ridiculous law. I'd rather meet a rottie or staffie off the lead than the little westie who makes my dog freak with her small dog attitude.
