The 1.6 ts in either the 147/156 is a sweet sweet engine, nicer than the 1.8 imo.. But yeah everything is in the above guide..

Bought a 156 a few years ago and based on advice here hasn't had a moments trouble.

This thread from gpf101 should tell you everything you need to know.

Stick with the advice in it and you could pick up a beaut.

Make sure the belts have been done and check the condition of the wishbones.

If you get a good well cared for 156/147 they're a great car. Just take your time and look for the obvious things.

Belts on the TS engine should be every 36k miles or 3 years, whichever came first.

The TS is a lovely sounding engine.

    I thought it was a bit flat...only 120bhp in the 1.6 compared to 144bhp in the 1.8

Having driven the 2 and owned the 1.8 I would have the 1.8 over the 1.6 any day

Your the only person I have ever seen that has recommened the 1.8 over the 1.6.

I would also recommend the 1.8 (140bhp) over the 1.6.

I would also advise on the 1.8, much better to drive. I had a few Alfas myself so I know what I'm talking about. 1.6 with 120bhp is still pokey though for what is it but definitely the 1.8 for me:)

I'm comparing both engines in the 156. The 147 could be ok in the 147 but felt the 1.8 was better.

Actually wanted the 2.0 but it was a trade off for the sport pack 3 and the 1.8 versus the 2.0 and boggo spec

Currently driving a 1.6 but have driven once or twice my Aunts 99 156 1.8 and I found the 1.8 to be not as nice as the 1.6. It didn't feel as light or as nimble as the 1.6 for some reason and the 1.6 sounded better too. Factor in the lower tax and insurance and suddenly that 20 extra bhp isn't justified imo of course.

The belts at 36k are a must as are regular oil changes. The leather interior if you can get one is so so classy and very comfortable too!
