    http://www.independent.ie/world-news/africa/man-fighting-for-life-after-shark-attack-in-south-africa-2891431.html
A Briton is fighting for his life today after he was mauled by a shark while swimming in Cape Town.

The 42-year-old man, reported to be part-time accountant Michael Cohen, was attacked by a great white at Fish Hoek beach in Cape Town.

Reports said Mr Cohen was rescued by a bystander after he ignored shark warnings to go swimming.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesman Craig Lambinon told the South African Press Association (Sapa): "It appears he was rescued from the water by a bystander who left the scene before we could identify him.

"On arrival, a 42-year-old man was found on the shore suffering complete amputation of his right leg, above the knee, and partial amputation of his left leg, below the knee."

Mr Lambinon said the victim was believed to live in the Cape Town suburb of Plumstead.

He was stabilised at the scene and then airlifted to Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic in a critical condition.

Mr Lambinon said: "The man was conscious when paramedics attended to him on the beach, but was sedated on-scene by paramedics in their efforts to stabilise the patient."

The city of Cape Town told Sapa that, when the man entered the water, the beach was still closed. A shark flag, indicating the presence of a great white, was flying.

A shark spotter stationed on the beach was warned by a fellow spotter on the mountain that someone had entered the water.

The spotter then ran to Clovelly Corner to try to get the swimmer out of the water, but the attack took place before he could reach him.

Spotters had sighted the shark 90 minutes before the attack, and closed the beach. The white shark flag was raised and the siren set off.

Mr Cohen was the only person in the water at the time.

    Press Association

Did he deserve to be eaten??

Ignorance. It says so in the article. He ignored the signs and went swimming. Therefore, ignorance.

Beach was closed, sirens went off, shark warning flags raised, no one else in the water.

    Deserved.

Ignorance would suggest that he had no knowledge of the fact the it was dangerous. But there was a Shark flag on the beach, so it's probably safe to assume that he did 'know' it was dangerous.

    Stupidity, pure and simple.

OP, no-one 'deserves' to be eaten.

Yeah, but it's just a nasty side effect of something higher up in the food chain with big appetite and bigger teeth.

There was a red flag indicating that it wasn't safe to swim due to possibility of shark attack and the guy was told twice not to go in the sea so stupidity wins the day .

I know i'm cheating here but i'd go with all 3. He was both ignorant and stupid for ignoring all the warning signs, as well as the danger that was present. At the same time I believe he was arrogant enough to think he could swim in water without being attacked by a shark, especially when there was a shark about.

complete moran IMHO. He ignored the flags, and verbal warnings from bystanders and shark-spotters. What exactly did he expect to happen?

    Suicide attempt?

What will become of the Shark? Man eaters tend to be hunted and killed yet procedure were put in place to prevent injury to both shark and swimmer.

Once these crazed killers have a taste for human legs and feet, they become addicted.

I'm sorry, but the only humane thing to do is get a posse together and kill as many of them as possible before they strike again.

Somebody needs to invent an anti-shark repellant were as soon as the shark smells human , he's so repulsed , it puts him off his mermaid sandwichs for life .

yep, the tide was probably on its way in, and so he bobbed back into shore.

could've been an ugly situation if the tide was on it's way out.

How the hell has no-one commented on this part of the story? A random bystander dragged him from the shark-infested waters, then abandoned him on the beach with both his feet amputated?

I'll find him for three thousand, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. I don't want no mates, there's just too many captains. Ten thousand for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the right leg the whole damn thing.

Years ago, my flatmate asked me to pick up a get-well card for her granny but ommitted to tell me granny had had an amputation.

It read 'Hope you're back on your feet again soon'. She still sent it, saying "My granny has a great sense of humour".
