I had an interview for this course in june..Apptitude test july 2nd...Garda clearance sent away 15th july and told course would start between october 1st and 15th.Rang fas today and they said no garda clearance back yet and they dont know how long it will take, possibly 18/20 weeks. The reason im so pixxxd off is that they asked us to organise work experience for certain dates but now that the course will be delayed by weeks at least, all of us that organised work experience wasted our time,It was hard enough trying to get it first time around....Along with trying to organise childcare places...Between garda and fas no one shows any consideration for people waiting on these courses

This is not the course provider's fault. Every course has the same problem and all of them are sending off the Garda Vetting at the same time. The delay is with Templemore in processing the forms.

TBH most courses start before the vetting comes back , as they are fully aware of theis prob

Yeah, FÁS must be different. We have to send ours out to their placements without the clearance, with a covering letter explaining that it is in progress. There are some places however, who will not accept students without it.

Our centre can't do the GV any earlier, as we have to have the students confirmed and registered on the course before the VEC will send it off. As well as that. the GV can only be done through an organisation, not by the individual themselves....such a crock of sh1te!

Im currently doing the healthcare course!! Fas will NOT cover your insurance in work placement! Be careful! We are getting a load of grief about it at the moment!

I wasnt having a go at fas...Its just with the high amount of forms being sent by fas (government body)to the guards(government body)that maybe they should be able to work more closely...The quicker courses start the quicker people are trained and have a better chance of getting employment and off the social welfare. All im saying if that all the government bodies work better together the system would be a lot more smooth to run. With regards to getting work experience...When you go into a place to ask and they agree..It can be hard to go back up 3 months later and say thanks for the offer but can i come up some other time, dont know when and still have work experience?I think its cases like this that make it hard for nursing home owners to give work experience to fas trinees in advance if even at all. Thanks all for comments so far,its good to hear feedback from people in the know..:)

No fas aren't covering the healthcare course anymore! It's an absolute disgrace!

It depends on the sector. I co-ordinate Childcare and while some créches (HSE run ones) are tight on this, others are absolutely fine with the GV being in progress. Our Pre-Nursing course co-ordinator has huge problems as the majority of work placements are HSE-run.

That is absolutely crazy! If you are doing work placement, the educational establishment/training body must cover the insurance.

You'd think wouldn't you? I seriously don't think it's the working relationship that's the problem however, it's the Gardaí in Templemore who have to go through every form manually. Remember that as well as FÁS course students, Further Ed and 3rd level students who wish to do experience with kids or vulnerable people, all SNAs, all primary and secondary teachers and all health professionals have to be vetted. That amount of applicants has to be in the tens of thousands:eek:

You'd imagine in this day and age that they should be able to key in your PPS number, see your record and tick a box:rolleyes:.

The garda vetting procedure, while necessary, is a bit of a nonsense. When staff in the college had to fill out the forms we were asked for addresses from 30 and 40 years ago. The way students move around and stay with each other it would be very difficult to prove if they lived in a place that they gave as an address 10 years ago.

It really is time we did the same as everyone else and had identity cards, which would speed this process up completely. I would be much more concerned about the students that emerge in the course of the year as being entirely unsuited to care situations but still can pass the course and get a position in care.
