My son (15) has asked me for weights for Christmas, can some one advise me what to get him as a starter set? any particular size weights should I get? Or is he too young to start lifting weights?

Also I'm looking for weights that are not too expensive in case the novelty wears of by Stephens Day

    Thanks

My opinion is that he is not too young.

Argos is your cheapest bet i'd say.

First of all, I agree with the above. Get him the cheapest set of dumbbells from Argos and see where he takes it from there.

A parent of one of the kids I train was in a similar situation regarding weight training a few years back. The advice I gave then was to set the kid a goal to do by Christmas or he wasn't getting them. I think it was 50 push ups in a row or something! A bit cruel cos the kid was getting it anyway but sure why not.

There are no inherent dangers to kids aged 15 lifting weights aside from the usual form issues. Just make sure he knows what he's doing, what to do and what not to do so that he doesn't injure himself. Oh and bring your car to Argos. My poor Ma carried my first dumbbell set home from town on the bus. Really. She's a saint that woman.

Or you can get them delivered from amazon. THey are actually cheaper since postage is free if you spend over £25, even though its 20kg+

that is coming out at EUR 45,69 at checkout

same set (but without the case) is 50 in argos

If you want to spend a bit more this set is the next up

it is better value if you are sure he will use them, as buying the additional barbell and extra weights after the dumbbells would be more pricey.

Do get cast iron ones, you can get cheaper vinyl/plastic weights but they are not much use as they are bulky and deteriorate over time. And the cast iron have a higher resale value if he does get rid of them. In fact I expect I could sell mine for more second hand than I paid for them originally new.

Well I'll tell her that rubadub but it was 18 years ago. She's a smart woman she'll point out the temporal flaws in your advice- namely that it has happened already and also that amazon didn't exist in 1993.

    Thanks anyway.
