Is there ever a case where an applicant will only be paid from the week that the decision or assessment has been made?

Or will it backdated from ('4 days after') the date of first claim?

A claim by a friend who had worked for 8-10 months full time, gone to Australia for 3,
then come back and applied said his claim wasn't backdated at all.

Is this possible in any circumstances or did she just mean for the 3 months she was in Australia?

Did your friend make their claim after returning from Australia? If so it will be paid from the date claim was made less the 3 waiting days. His claim cannot be backdated for the 3 months he was in Australia as he was not in the country.
