Sneaky 3-day ski-trip - Advice needed!

    Hi folks,

I'm hoping to get a sneaky 3 days skiing trip with the missus in early 2012 sorted.

Given the usual issues with only being able to book accomodation from Sat-Sat, can anyone recommend a resort/accomodation (and method used for getting there) that were happy to take a 3-4 night booking?

    Thanks,
    Hyb

    Hi Hybrif humour,

I just recommended this place to another fella who was talking about 4 night ski trips, and it sounds like it could be good for you too:cool:- http://www.activitybreaks.com/product/20821/montecampione-skiing-holiday-in-italian-alps-at-hotel-armonia/

I have travelled to this place before with activity breaks and it was great, as not many places seem to be able to include ski passes and ski hire, unless you are staying for 7 days, but this company does. Ive been to montecampione (we traveled with ryanair from dublin to milan bergamo ) and its a smaller resort, but really nice with good choice of bars and restaurants, and its also worth mentioning that activity breaks seem to offer other short ski trips, so it may be worth checking them out.

    hope that helps...

Travel in January, things are much quieter and accom. providers are always willing to do a deal. They will hold out until the last minute in the hope of getting a 7 day booking so you won't be able to book far in advance.
Other alternative is just show up in resort and contact the tourist office. I've done this several times and have never been let down.

Yes, you may not be able to book any accomodation until the week before as they'll hold out for a week's booking first

If you're flexible on your dates wait for the conditions to be good

If not, book your flights now then you can book your transfers / car hire and accomodation a few days before you go

Good website here with a list of ski resorts near given airports:

Get the early AL flight from Dublin to Geneva followed by the Chamexpress (25€ pp each way) to Chamonix, book into the Hotel Alpina in the centre of Chamonix (Ski bus outside the door). (took me four and a half hours last time from Dublin airport to my hotel in Chamonix)

Flight time is 1hr 40min to 2 hours, transfer time 1hr 10 min to 1hr 30min, so you can ski the day you arrive. Grab the bus out to Le Grand Montets, and there is a goo equipment shop at the bottom of the slopes (LGM is more suitable for strong skiers). There is also a nice equipment shop beside the Hotel Alpina, so you could get your equipment there and head for le Tour (more suitable for intermediate skiers).

Hard to beat Chamonix for convenience, Alpina not cheap though, nor is Chamonix in general. Also think its more of an off piste resort, the pistes aren't that great, although they are fairly spectacular.

If I had a few days like that, I'd fly to Paris after work, get an overnight train to Bourg St Maurice, and ski Les Arcs/La Plagne. I'd stay in Hotel Malgovert in Seez, which always seems to have space, and which will give you a voucher for a reduced price lift pass. It seems to be miles away from the skiing, but there is a free bus which goes from its front door to the foot of the funi so it's actually easier access than half the hotels in the resort.

I've done this a few times, and never had a problem getting in.

    Thanks

    Hi Tricky1979,

The night life is pretty good to be honest, as there is a good selection of pubs and bars, (Irish bars, English pubs and wine bars) plus good cafes and restaurants that don't charge too much.
But that said, its not a Magaluf/Ibiza type of night life so don't expect that. I think there is 1 club but I didn't get to it last time, but it is definitely a good spot for getting round a few bars!

I was going to recommend Kitzbuhel but I see the Hahnenkamm race is on 20 to 22 January 2012 so they will probably have the run closed off leading up to the race.
Maybe later on in the season, would be worth a look, fly Dublin to Munich & a 1hr 10 min train straight to Kitzbuhel. perfect spot for a 3 day ski break.

There's several hostels in Kitzbuhel / Kirchenburg, Austria who should be able to facilitate a short stay and as someone else said it is only just over an hour from Salzburg / Munich airports.

Check Hostelworld and you'll see them, most, if not all, have twin / double rooms and a good nightlife.
