    Hi all,

Does anybody have an update on who fully trained today with the likes of Bowe, kearney, O'Brien etc expected to train? RTE usually have an update but nothing so far.

    Thanks

Possibly because it's still the middle of the night in New Zealand. I'm sure there'll be a report this evening, which will be daytime in NZ.

Kearney, O'Brien, Earls didnt take part in full training, but took part in most and will be available for selection. All other members took part.

When is team expected to be announced?

Thanks for that, glad to hear things are on track.
Id imagine it will be announced early Friday morning our time but can anyone confirm?

That was yesterdays report though. Todays will hopefully say that the 3 players trained.

D'arcy took full part in training yesterday too.

And I'd say team announcement at 2.15 am Friday morning.

Radio reports this morning saying O'Connell is a big doubt after picking up an injury in training.

Crap, let's pray its not serious because he's been playing very well and would be a massive loss.

Meh, we should be able to beat Italy handy enough with Cullen instead of him and I'd much rather rest O'Connell and have him 100% for the QF rather than risk him against Italy and make matters worse. So long as it's no as serious that it would keep him out of the next round, I wouldn't freak out.

He actually picked up the injury in the warm up to the Australia would you believe - A slight hamstring tear which has not responded well to the treatment!

Huge loss but Leo is well capable against the Italians.. I just hope with Paulies injury being hamstring related he is not on the sidelines for the remainder of the tourney(Granted we're still in it come 11:00 Sunday morning!)

I have complete faith in Leo coming in and doing a great job - we're lucky to have them both as it would be top quality replacing the same.

If POC is any doubt at all Kidney shouldn't start him. I just hope if that's the case that he starts Cullen and not Ryan.

Have there been any comments/updates on how BOD's shoulder is doing after his (almost) two week rest..?

Its already too late to consider POC for the Italy game. his injury has not cleared up and therefore he can't play. I really hope Kidney doesn't put him out there injured .....

Agreed I don't think O'Connell should start at all. Cullen is well capable of leading the lineout, maybe have Paul on the bench incase we really get into trouble.

Cullen will come in, not Ryan, if POC is absent. Ryan, whilst full of endeavour, doesn't run line outs and therefore it would be madness to bring him in. Cullen is capable of doing a solid job but the whole line out system is affected by losing the presence of POC. There will be less confidence in it and there's no genuinely explosive jumper. POC is way ahead of any of the others in terms of jumping. Cullen's brain narrows the gap but he can't match POC's natural athleticism. The one effect of this is that if we're playing a territorial game, our ability to compete on Italian ball is significantly diminished. We'll need a big game from our line out without POC or for us to keep the ball in hand. We can't essentially hand back possession to the opposition.

Agreed, if there's any chance of making it worse let him miss this and recover for the next round (assuming we win).

The only thing is if it is the original hamstring injury he picked up against OZ i don't see how he said in his blog on Wednesday that he expects to fully train on Friday. They must have known then it wasn't responding to treatment.

Any way fingers crossed its not bad enough to keep him on the side lines for long we need him to put the fear of god into opponents ;-)

O'Connell is a loss but not a 'massive' one. Cullen will be more than an apt deputy. I would imagine that DK would look at it this way too; we're lucky to have someone of Cullen's stature in reserve.

After Ross, Bod, Healy (in that order) PoC is the biggest loss we could have. The difference irish pack when he is not there is incredible

While this is true I think you are underestimating just how good Cullen is. I wouldnt worry much if POC cant make it this sunday.

Cullen is a very good player, there's no doubt about it. But O'Connell is pretty much a freak of nature and his leadership, drive and intensity really do transform our pack.

Whilst not having POC for the Italy game may not be a huge loss, it will definitely change the type of game we play. If ROG/Murray has been picked I wonder if DK will be rethinking his game plan and start Sexto/Reds instead?

id Poc is injured and cant play(although a huge loss,we should be able to beat italy without him imop)

would thier be any chance of putting ferris in,and playing leamy in the back row;)

Or maybe play Buckley in the second row?

The last thing we need is the penalty machine that is Leamy

    or jennings

Why either of these though? It's not like we are out of options in the second row if POC can't play, so why experiment with Ferris like that (for whom being lifted in a lineout is a bad idea given the nature of his knee injury and cartilage damage), rather than just using Cullen (specialist second row, and proven lineout operator) or even Ryan (more gametime at 4/5 than Ferris, IIRC). Cullen and Ryan are there for just this eventuality, so I fail to see the logic of Ferris moving to the second row.

    Yes very high chance.

Unless of course Kidney is put off the idea by the fact that in all his years playing professional rugby Ferris has never played a game as a lock.

He played there for Ulster on a limited number of occasions.

If POC is out then Cullen will come in in a straight swap. There won't be any silly rejigging.

They were still saying it this evening. Hope he gets the OK soon as he is playing well. However, we're more than covered at #5 against the Italians with Leo Cullen.
