Can't say much about yrv, but would you every consider something like a suzuki jimny (1.3 litre baby 4x4 but genuinely capable) or mitsubishi pajero junior (can be got with 1.1 engine, not as great off road but still proper 4wd and quite capable for what it is), 3 reasons for these suggestions, A: they'd be handy for snow and ice, and B: you'd be sort of just sitting into them from standing position if you're not too short, rather than sitting down into a small car and C: they have small engines, not too bad on fuel and have cheap tax, specially the pajero junior

The Jimny will kill you if you have a bad back, they are very hard and bouncy.

Depends what kind of bad back. My own back plays up sometimes when bending down or getting into awkward positions but doesn't cause problems due to bumps etc. I have an uncle who has the same sort of problem. But on the other hand i do know people who would be affected by bouncing around but not bending, and some both.

Sounded to me from the first post that this person seems to suffer when bending the back leaning over or getting into a position, similar to myself though mine is not very severe and not constant

Ya I get you, what I would say having owned a jimny is that off road they are awesome, on road they are hard and bouncy and the vibrations will go through your body. I loved mine but I do 18 - 25k miles a year so couldn't live with it. Realistically they shouldn't be driven faster than 80kph and they are not that great on petrol tbh, if you use the 4wd regularly like I did they are worth their weight in gold, otherwise they are not.
