If it was up to you who would you have liked to see as president who is not running?
I am happy with who i am voting for.But so many people dont like any of them.
Who in your view would have been the ideal candidate?

Sir Bob Geldof, he could make a very good president. He's certainly got the credentials and more awards in so many different areas not many other candidates could come close.

Given the pathetic choices, I'm almost tempted to say "me"!

If John Hume was available, maybe him. Or maybe Dessie O'Malley, who was the first politician of principle that I really saw.

In the past I would have thought Shane Ross, but he's disappointed me since he got elected.

But yeah, when you think about it we are really short of any impressive options that spring to mind.

Do we have any well-known decent role models in this country ? Other than the likes of Paul O'Connell or some other impressive, dignified sportsman ?

EDIT : Geldof wouldn't have been a bad option, and at least the phrase "banana republic" is a little more accurate / truthful than "26 counties" :D

Bit rough though? unshaven, unkempt hair, with questionable Irish heritage (Belgian), and he curses alot :)

Pat Cox, the man I think Fine Gael should have run.

As I have just stepped down from An Taisce's board and council I would nominate a few suitables.

Michael Smith or Colm Mac Eochaidh, the men prepared to put up a significant sum of their own money to expose planning corruption; which unknown to them lead to Bertie Ahern's exposure and eventual imprisonment (I hope)

Also Ian Lumley for a selfless lifetime of intelligent comment and activism on how badly Ireland has performed in planning, environment and heritage protection.

Adi Roche and Semus Heaney are the only two that spring from my mind.

Oh, Jackie Healy-Rae. I can just see him standing there on the steps of the White House with Obama and the Washington press corp wondering what the hell just hit them.

John O Shea of Goal. He seems to one of the few peopole willing to telling unvarnished truths about this country's shabby aid record of handing over vast anounts of money to tyratns and dictators in the name of ' charity'
After that I would nominate Kevin Myers solely on the grounds that he as pissed off some many people :) He also is quite courteous about replying to emails even when the person hasnt agreed with him.

    Mary Robinson.

She is eligible to stand for a second term, did an excellent job the last time, her track record on national and international issues speaks for itself and she is very well respected abroad.

I think Labour could come to regret not nominating Fergus Finlay. Hopefully he will get the nod in 7 years.

And of course Bertie should be on the list. The relief on count night when he is eliminated would be like popping a nasty pimple.

When you look at the list of candidates it's the only purpose that makes sense.

Another one here for Fergus Finlay.

Its a pity he didn't try running as an independant after not getting the Labour nomination.
