Curious what are people's thoughts and experience in relation to buying refurbished products from Apple?

Looking at buying a 27" iMac and for the price of the 2.7Ghz one I could get the 3.1Ghzx (which also has better graphics) for the same price refurbished.

The policy is outlined here - http://store.apple.com/ie/browse/home/specialdeals/refurbfaq_popup

But just curious people's experiences buying such a product.

If you search refurb there are a lot of threads about using the refurb store.

Refurbs are fine, all that might happen is you (sometimes) get a machine with slight cosmetic imperfections.
If you think the imperfection is too bad, demand a replacement.

This machine (MBP 2.2Ghz) was bought for €500-odd less than the new price.
In the 4-5yrs I've had it, I had to send it back for a manufacturing fault once (documented nVidia GPU problem -- got a replacement mainboard, free & fitted).

You can't demand a replacement on a refurb. If you're not happy they will refund you.

I got a refurb iPod once, and it died a few months later. I got sent a replacement refurb, and it died within a year.

Haven't bought an Apple product since.

I've bought a number of items from the refurb store and have been very happy with them. You get the same warranty, a plainer box and pay less.

I recommend the refurb store to everybody considering buying an Apple device. The only reason to consider the retail store is if the item you're looking for isn't available in the refurb store.

I bought my old Mac off the refurb store and had no problems. However, you could also just ring Apple in Cork and tell them you're a student.... The discount is circa 10%.

Better still, if you know someone who works there, you can use their even larger discount.
