Can someone please explain why being a asshole is so acceptable in this country-is it some sort of social ritual?

Honestly though, I think its to show that they are comfortable with you and assume you dont mind.

My girlfriend is Italian and was literally horrified when she met my friends for the first time.

Pussies don't like dicks, because pussies get ****ed by dicks. But dicks also **** assholes: assholes that just want to **** on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way. But the only thing that can **** an asshole is a dick, with some balls. The problem with dicks is: they **** too much or **** when it isn't appropriate - and it takes a pussy to show them that. But sometimes, pussies can be so full of **** that they become assholes themselves... because pussies are an inch and half away from ass holes. I don't know much about this crazy, crazy world, but I do know this: If you don't let us **** this asshole, we're going to have our dicks and pussies all covered in ****!

Irish people are so emotionally stunted I genuinely think it's how we show affection... And anyway, everyone knows banter comes before feelings.

Begrudgery, we like to bring people down because we are insecure in ourselves

Gentle blagging, its fun as long as,,,,,,,,,,,

But why to we proclaim to a god or utter a sexual word when we hit our thumbs with a hammer.

putting others down makes folk feel superior which masks their own feelings of inadequacy

its a fine line between fun and bullying, some folk get it wrong

We are allowed to make as much fun of our friends as we want. It's not being an asshole, it's bonding.

A little bit of slagging gives you an idea of what a person is like ; being able to laugh at your own mistakes/flaws etc. is a valuable skill.

Me and my friends, the ones I have been friends with since school, spend practically all of our time taking the piss out of each other but there are lines that are not crossed. Everyone has stuff that really gets to them and it goes without saying that that stuff is off limits. I don't think you should take the piss too much unless you are good enough friends with the person to know where the line is, if you cross the line then you are out to make them feel bad and that makes you an asshole in my book.

Apparently, the Japanese are wild ones for it... which I didn't expect as they are so polite, but I suppose it makes sense on reflection... & what about 'celebrity roasts' in the US? Some of that stuff is fairly hard hitting.

It's not an Irish thing. People just like banter, unless you're on the receiving end.

Humans, as with many other species, are social animals whose brains are hardwired to conform to a social hierarchy.
You unconsciously assess everyone you meet to see if they're above, below or on an equal status with you.
When you meet a stranger, you may ask what is their job, to roughly compare them to yourself, eg. if they're a doctor or a toilet cleaner.

In a social group, funny people are socially in demand.
Humour generally shows intelligence, quick wit, alternative thinking etc.

    There's also another side.
Personal teasing or slagging someone within a social group is a form of peer pressure, to get them to comply with the norms of that group.
If you slag someone off for listening to girls music, or wearing a ponytail, underlying that slagging, you want them to conform to your standards.
    You want them to change.
