Bath City had five players sent off as an FA Youth Cup tie descended into farce following a row over underpants.

City boss Billy Clark was also dismissed by referee Darren Adie, who ruled players' underwear breached rules during Newport County's 6-0 win.

Underwear must be the same colour as the shorts but Bath's white pants were visible below their black shorts.

"It was all very surreal. I was angry with the officials," said Bath managing director Paul Williams.

"Rules are rules but the officiating wasn't what it should have been for a youth cup tie.

"Why didn't the officials check the colours before the start?

Defender Billy Cooper was first to be sent off during the first qualifying round tie at Newport.

Manager Clark was then punished for dissent and ordered from the dugout, while Ciaran Rogers, Zemell Burton, Ben Bicknell and goalkeeper Lewis Pierre also saw red.

A statement on Bath's official website said: "We had been expecting to publish a match report of last night's FA Youth Cup first qualifying match between Bath Academy and the Newport County Academy.

"Due to the controversial events that took place during the match - and the fact the vast majority of the players in the match are under 18 - we will not do so at this time."

Newport County secretary Mike Everett said he had no complaints about the referee's performance.

"I understand that the initial problem was regarding incorrect undergarments," he said. "The referee made his decisions. There's not a lot I can add.

    WHAT?!

The colour of your underwear has to match your shorts? What kind of bullcrap is that?

It would be a classic to see a ref try send off Rooney or Terry over something like this , maybe its only a rule that applies to the youths, still stupid mind you !

He enforced the rules, which he has too. Bath can't really complain because they don't know the rules themselves.

Its the same for Premier League players, they just have professional kit men sorting it out for them. Hence why Rooney, Ashley Young etc., always have the same colour undershirt as their jersey.

I presume its not actually underpants and its tight undershorts that they are talking about, its the rules, it should have been spotted before the game started and there would have been no problem.

Happened in one of our CCFL games last season that one of the lads wearing white undershorts under blue shorts was told by the ref to change them at half time, what made that one even more stupid was that there was players on our team actually wearing black shorts and white shorts instead of blue and the ref said nothing to them

I'm fairly sure there is a rule like this for youth soccer in this country too. Think I read it when I was becoming a ref, just no one abides by it really. There is definitely a rule for it in basketball here, but again, no one enforces it.
Bit ridiculous from the ref really though, it's not like it's giving anyone an unfair advantage.

Now the undershorts thing makes sense rather than underpants. Sensationalist journalism at it's best!

In an FA Youth Cup clash, it'd make sense that they all be kit out the same but in regards to undershorts, it seems to be going a bit too far.

more so for cycling shorts, but ya the rule is there, if its on display, it must be the same colour as your shorts.

Odd that they would be sent off rather than ordered to change surely?

    How long were these pants?

Thats what I was thinking. Can't remember which game it was in but Gavin Peers was sent to change his earlier this season. He just whipped them off at the side of the pitch.

This article suggests it wasn't just thermal undershorts but actual underpants, and that some players were made to strip down and change by the side of the pitch. Seems a little wrong if that's accurate, they're just teenagers after all.

I was thinking back to a few season ago when one loi team had to change 'cause the trim clashed or something, think Buttimer was the ref anyway. In reality I imagine the kids could gt a change of underwear quick enough? Stupid to send them off imo.
