Irish resident setting up UK bank account

Is it possible for an Irish resident to set up a UK bank account without having a postal address in the UK.

I am wary of Irish banks and the euro and want to invest my small amount of savings in sterling.

Also, what is the deal with offshore back accounts and what are the tax implications.

Get a mate in the UK to sign a letter saying you are resident with them. Then bring in their utility bill and open an account. Note you are supposed to be resident for the next 6 months... but things change... and you might unexpectedly have to go back to Ireland!

Also apparently HSBC let you open account with Irish utility bill.

When I moved across Barclays required proof of address and proof of a job.

I have an account in First Trust in Derry and I live in Donegal.

I lived in Derry at the time I started it though but they have no issue changing me to an Irish address. Same for the wife.

Halifax Derry on the other hand won't let the wife change the address on her account, she has to close it.

BOI in Derry told me that I could open an account on a southern address too though.

If you work in the North and have to have your wages paid into a UK account then what else can you do?

Might be helpful if the OP clarified what type of a/c you want to open. yes' I know sterling, but current or deposit or maybe something else?

Might be helpful to the OP if posters giving advice clarifed what a/c types yere on about.

Otherwise this whole threads just one great crap shoot......

I have any savings I have in the back bank at the moment and I am concerned it will be worthless in the near future due to the state of the euro.

I think deposit account in uk/offshore could be my best option

Get a proof of ID (passport) and a proof of address(drivers licence) and pop over the border to Ulster Bank in Newry/Derry. Go to the information desk and ask them to set up an account and they'll get you up and running in less than 30 minutes. If you want a debit card for withdrawal, they might ask you to have a recent payslip too.
