Hi a friend of mine car went into the nct yesterday and passed but last friday i check the usual stuff in the car oil, coolent etc and to my surprise there was no oil on the dipstick

had to put in 2.5 liters of oil to get it up to full on the dipstick but just wondering what damage if any would be expected in the future because of so little oil in the car

    btw its a 2007 peogeot 207

    all replies appreciated

How long since the last oil change? Assuming the remaining oil was relatively clean, and that the engine was never actually starved of oil, no damage at all. They're two big assumptions, though.

If car still runs that's a good sign :)
Doesn't those take about 3 litres of oil?
What oil did you put it?

Keep checking level every day for 2 weeks. You may have a big leak that happened just before you checked it.
If level drops, take it to a mechanic.

put in 5w40 and dont know if it takes 3 litres or 2.5litres as the local motor factors told me it takes 2.5l and thats how much it took to bring her back to normal on the dip stick

Is this 207 petrol or diesel? If it's diesel and has been running on 2.5 litres less than the required level the turbo might well fail in the future due to this neglect.

If the car only takes 3 litres to fill the sump and filter surely the low oil pressure light would be on if it needed 2.5 litres of oil.

If you can't find a leak it sounds to me like its been a long time since it was serviced. My sister has a 2002 citroen xsara and a few months ago I just asked her when was the car last serviced and she hadn't a clue, so I dipped the car for oil and nothing showed up on the dipstick. Topped it up and serviced it the following saturday. Car seems fine now but that much of an oil loss is bound to throw up problems in the future.

dont know exactly how much she takes was told by the motor factors it takes 2.5 litres and thats what was put in her to get the oil level back to normal

btw as orginally stated the dip stick was bone dry when i check her on friday
the engine wasnt warm, and when you put the key in the car it says oil level ok etc but its a peogeot and could be the sensor was faulty

but as orginally asked am wondering what future damage if any would happen becasue she was low on oil etc

I'd check the oil daily for the next while, just to be sure it's not burning it.
I had plenty of cars that didn't smoke or drip oil, but went through gallons of the stuff.
