After test drivin a few S40s and S60s, I'm lovin the comfort/safety of these cars.

....Im just wary that I'll buy one of these lovely lookin S40s and regret it 2 or so years later when I'm stood outside a shop...in the rain...doin a David Banner impression etc...:) tryin to cram a buggy (baby on the way) and other stuff into the boot.

If I'm right to have this concern, would the following kinda car be a good buy? (bearin in mind I'd hold on to it for about 5 years)

Far too expensive considering it's the old model, 1.8 petrol and relatively high mileage at that.

The particular car I linked to is with a dealer. So I'd like to think, if buyin a similar car privately, I'd get it for less.

My question was more to do with the model itself and if its reliable/performs well.
(with a detailed service history, I wouldn't be put off by 'high' milage)

If there's any past/present Volvo owners out there, I appreciate any comment/judgment on these egs also

We've talked before, but I'll speak to you a little bit more on this matter.
The estates aren't very roomy but in my opinion they're ok. The V70 is much more roomy than the V50.
V50 has larger boot space than the V40.
V50 is more comfortable than the V40.
V50 is more modern than the V40.
V50 is more reliable than the V40.

They're both good cars but the V50 looks much better :)

The V40 and V50 aren't really proper estate cars just to let you know.

If you're looking for reliability, the V40 shouldn't be overlooked though. I think they still look good today and are very nicely finished considering they were assembled on the same production line as the Mitsubishi Carisma/Space Star.

Size, the boot isn't much bigger than a larger hatchback.

    I'm just realistic.

When it comes to bootspace, I bow to the Skoda fetishists and their beloved Octavia/Superb.:)

Colleague of mine in work has a V50. Was really surprised at how small the boot was. It will still take a buggy but wont leave you with much else...

I'd be going for the V70 if you need a bit of boot space

    Thanks folks

Mrs. R.O.R has had a 2005 V50 1.8i SE since early 2007 and put about 80,000km on it. Except for the Alternator having to be replaced, 4 tyres and 3 headlight bulbs, the only issue we've ever had was it wouldn't open one day. That was sorted by banging the key on the roof rail, and it's never happened again.

Performance and fuel consumption are avereage for a car with that size of engine, not terrible but not great. Rear seat leg room is very limited, but if you have young kids that should be OK. Boot (as mentioned) isn't huge, but should be big enough for a buggy and all the bits that go with it - I'll be able to confirm or deny that in a few weeks time  It's been plenty big enough for the dog up to now though :P

I left the link to the 2004 model in your original post, as I've seen that car up close and it really was in immaculate condition. It was a customers car that we sold on their behalf when he went in to an Insignia, so I don't have a service history.

I would be double checking the mileage on the car though as I have a slightly higher reading from when the car was sold. Might be a mis-type on our system, or might be a mis-type from the dealer. Difference is only about 9,000km and it's hardly worth clocking a car for that, but it's worth asking the question.
