The best and worst Divisions?

What are the best and worst Divisions?

As a Packers fan, I would like to say the NFC North, because of the history of the Packers and the Bears, even the non Superbowl winning Vikings. But Detroit really have been at a bit of a loss in the game.

Have to concede that for me the NFC East, with behemoths like the Redskins, the Cowboys, the Giants and the Eagles. Maybe it's because I started following the game in the early 80s, when all 4 were massive franchises.

As for the worst, the AFC South leaves me a bit cold. The Colts have a great history, the Titans, Texans and Jaguars leave me a bit meh.

Have to give credit to the AFC East too, for the Dolphins Pats and Jets. The Bills are a bit of a puzzler, they did have that run in the early 90s I guess.

NFC west is the worst and it's not even close. NFC east is the best

At the moment of course. But over the years, imo, no division with the 49ers will ever be bad.

Again, as I took up following the game in the 80s, my opinions will be affected by memories of Montana and Rice, but they were a formidable outfit then, surely one of the greatest ever. And even the Rams, they may be seen as a weak outfit by fans older and younger than me, but think many my age will think "Dickerson", losing to the Bears in 85 etc.

I guess I'm like one of the football fans who regard Leeds, Sheff Wednesday and Forest as big teams. But would have far more interest in the Rams and 49ers than new outfits like the Texans or Jaguars, or even the Titans who I just hardly identify with the old Oilers.

I have to agree with Conor here. The AFC South just leaves me cold, I can't associate with the Texans, Jags or Titans, and I can't stand the Colts!

It doesn't make it the worst division, but it's certainly the most 'un-interesting' from my point of view.

The AFC East and NFC East for me are the most interesting. Both contain 4 teams with a 'history' who all, at one point in time, have been the powerhouse of their division, and in some cases the NFL.

As regards the best and worst...that varies season to season, but this year I'd vote as follows:

Best: AFC East (2 potential Superbowl Champs and the 'Cardiac' Bills), followed by NFC South (3 potential playoff teams)

Worst: NFC West (Do I need to comment??) followed by AFC South (excluding the Texans, there isn't a good them in the division)

If we are talking in the current Superbowl Era (and taking into account the divisional setups as they are now) then statistically the NFC East is the strongest having had 11 Wins and 8 Runners Up. After that would be the AFC East with 6 and 10.
The weakest stats wise is the NFC South with 2 wins and 4 Runners Up.

In todays game the weakest obviously is the NFC West with the NFC North probably being the strongest but you can make a case for others.

Its hard to definitively rank the divisions but right now I'd say its a bit like this:

    Tier 1:
NFC East (3, maybe 4 playoff calibre teams)
AFC East (3 playoff calibre teams, at least 1 maybe 2 potential SB winners)
NFC South (3 playoff calibre teams, at least 1 potential champion)
NFC North (The best team in the league, 2 potential playoff teams)

    Tier 2:
AFC North (2 very good teams, 2 very bad teams)
AFC West (1 very good team, 1 decent team, 2 poor teams)

    Tier 3:
AFC South (This division without Manning is the definition of mediocre, I'm yet to be convinced by the Texans)

    Tier 4
NFC West (Just terrible in general)

AFC North current teams have three superbowls in the last decade, equal with AFC East
Browns have two wins already and are heading for a good season

And Bengals may be a joke but they were division champions two years ago

Shift AFC North up to Tier One ;)
