Buying Jewellery Making Tools

    Hello

My wife has just started a jewellery making evening class and is keen to buy the tools she needs.

The tutor mentioned looking at ebay, or on Gems TV, but I just wonder whether any readers have their own ideas.

The tutor gave her a long list of 'ideal tools' including ..

    chain nose pliers
    crimping pliers
    flat nosed pliers
    round nosed pliers
    3-in-1 pliers
    bent nosed pliers
    needle nosed pliers
    nipper tool
    wire cutter
    end cutters.

I reckon a purpose made kit would probably be more economical than buying individual items.

Are there any jewellery making hobbyists watching this post ? Where did you get your tools from ?

    Many thanks:D

    Brian

The best way is to buy online. It will be much more cheaper than buy in the shop. You can buy on ebay or etsy.com

You can try this shop: http://www.yellowbrickroad.ie/

I haven't made jewellery for a little while now, but I think that your best bet is online, unfortunately the suppliers here are very expensive, here's a link to a set of pliers that I think are a must for beginners and are a great price for a starter set.

I would advise against buying crimping pliers until she knows she is going to definately like jewellery making as they are an investment and you can always get crimp covers to hide "ugly" crimping (you can use your flat pliers to crimp)

As for wire cutters you can pick up a pair of heavy duty toe nail clippers to cut wire and jewellery wire..

    Hope that helps...

BTW can I ask where she is doing the evening course?

When I did a beginners course, we were told that the 3 most important tools when starting out are flat nose pliers, round nose pliers and a wire cutter. Somebody got me a giftset containing all three of these from ‘beads and bling’ (in Dublin: http://www.beadsandbling.com/store/). I don’t know how much the set cost, but it should be easy enough to find out.

The 3-in-1 pliers does the job of round nose and side-cutter and, to some extent, chain-nose pliers, so if she bought those she wouldn't need some of the other ones. I think that a pair of those and a pair of either chain nose or needle nose (finer tips) would do most jobs.
The 3-in-1 could also crimp (flatten crimp beads) but proper crimping pliers fold and crimp, making the crimp bead smaller and less noticeable.

The best place to buy a kit, (basic kit) which is all she will need until she has had some experience and understands what she is making, is on ebay, she can buy a basic kit for approx. 12-15 euro, the crimper, she will not need at this early stage, and can add to her kit through suppliers on ebay as she needs to. I run a course for beginners and I do not recommend them buying all the equipment at the early stages, the basics are enough for the beginners.
