    HI All,

Here is a new event being organised for The Mark Pollock Trust. Many of you will know Mark from his amazing adventures in the Antarctic, Arctic, Gobi Desert etc whilst blind. Mark was met with another unexpected challenge when he broke his back last year and is now without the use of his legs.

Check out www.run4mark.com and you will see details of a novel and unique set of running races that are being organised all over the country on the same night - November 16th. All are night races.

The Leinster race will take place in and around the grounds of Trinity College on a very unique course, after work!

Details on how to register etc are on the site above.

Note: All proceeds going to The Mark Pollock Trust and the organisation is 100% voluntary

These races are a great idea. I've followed Mark Pollock's blog over the last few months and he really is a truly motivating person. For someone who has faced tremendous challenges, he has such a stoical, can do approach to life.
From a medical perspective, his blog is well worth a read as the advancements that are being made for the visually impaired and those with spinal injuries are incredible- and seemingly close to some of this cutting edge research, he details these really well.

For anyone in Galway the Connaught leg is in the grounds of NUIG.

Thought this was worth a mention - pity there's only one location in each province and its nowhere near me, otherwise I'd give it a shot.

Just looking at the entries. I see Galway, the only option is 2 mile time trial.. Is there another option? All the rest have two options and all the rest have an option over 5km.

It be a shame if that is all Galway had to offer. i don't know the course. If it was a loop course of 2mile. Couldn't they have an option to do 3 laps for the 10km.

All I can see is that it starts from Trinity... I think!

Very hard to get any info on it, hence why I came here to check. I've signed up anyway cos it's such a great cause and Mark's such an incredible guy. Just hoping it's a good event!

Ronnie085 posted a link to the course map in this thread. It's a great cause and I'm strongly considering taking part although the fact that I've got a race this Saturday and also the following Saturday is slightly putting me off.

So it's just a few laps of Trinity then?? I thought that map was just to show you where registration was, very hard to make out any kind of route from it. Or an 8K route at least. Is it 2 laps maybe?

    I'm confused.

Looks that way. One lap would be 4k I'd imagine. I agree that the course is a bit hard to make out on that map.

It's 4 laps of the route shown on map - 2km per lap

Which of the locations are you in? Dublin is full, but there are still places for Galway, Cork and Belfast. You can register on the day, but each location will probably have different times for on-the-day registration, so just check that.

edit - ah, Dublin. Yeah, I'm afraid not. Feel free to come on down to the Galway one though if you fancy a day trip :D

2 miles in Galway due to the particular route that was available.

There will be a bag-drop in Luce Hall (where registration is) as far as I know

Hope everyone got on great this evening despite the miserable weather. My closest was Dublin but it was full up by the time I went to register so I went for my own Run 4 Mark in the Dark in Roundwood. Its for such a great cause so I hope that it raises a lot of much needed funds for Mark

Completed Dublin one this evening. Either the course was shorter than 8km or all my training is paying off! Anyone get an accurate distance on it? Very enjoyable event tho. Very crowded but nice flat course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,053 ✭✭✭opus

Did the one in Cork earlier, good crowd there, start was delayed 15 mins to get everyone to the start. My first ever 10k race :)

My iPhone App (adidas miCoach) is saying it was 6.93km long, but it always underestimates by approx 100/150 metres, so it could be more like 7.05 or 7.1km. Does anyone know the exact distance?

It was certainly very crowded, and too much so imo considering that we had to do 4 laps of the same circuit - hence lots of overtaking. The main problem was that the paths were not wide enough to cater for the shear volume of people, which resulted in a lack of discipline in terms of running position i.e. everyone was supposed to keep to the left and allow overtaking on the right - this did not happen which made it very difficult overtaking. To be fair it was probably publisized as a fun run - and thats what it turned out to be.

Anyways it was for an excellent cause - so its great that so many people took part. :)

and did you wear a base layer for it? :)

You must be a fan of mine Ray!

No, I opted for a very light windshield type jacket which I picked up in Wheelworx at the weekend (I should have probably updated ye on the other thread). It was the business considering how wet it was tonight, plus I did not overheat in it, so I think its the way forward. The base layers still seem to be getting good reviews all the same!

Finished the run in 31:50 in case you're interested!

My Garmin had it clocked at 7:07K - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/129128308

Era, it was a bit of a mess to be honest with the lapping and all the congestion but I was never expecting too much. At the end of the day it was a fun run and all to raise a bit of funding for Mark. I'm still delighted I did it, was enjoyable and for a hell of a cause.

Let's just hope it makes a difference to Mark, some fella.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,311 ✭✭✭xebec

My Garmin clocked it at 4.29 miles (~6.9km), not too worried about the distance as it was more about the cause.

As a race it was a mess, too much stopping and starting, got lapped by the leaders after about 100m while trying to go through the gate in the Rose Garden, running on cobbles wasn't fun.

But despite all that and the heavy rain I had loads of fun, time wasn't anything special but much better than anything I've done over the last few months so well please.

Was definitely just a fun run - and great to see Mark himself clapping on the runners at gate back into Trinity off Westland Row. A great cause, and delighted we did it. Had some good chats with people along the route.
