Volvo V 50 gave out this morning steering and power seemed to go. A garage has looked at it and said it is the Alternator they also are saying we need a new battery price range €770? I am wondering about the battery and the price. Any advice?

Did any message come up on it ?

Check the cable going into the fusebox in the car, sometimes this can come loose and cause the failure you describe.

Because Volvo are/were owned by Volvo. An alternator from a ford focus is the same as the v50 iirc. Worth chacking out anyway.

    €770 is a bit steep.

Got ours done by a good indy for around €500 (I think).

Previously had it replaced by a recon unit by a friend - that only lasted about 8 months so was a bit of a false economy.

Where are you based OP? I got the alternator done in my S40 recently for a much lower rate.

    How old is it ?

As this is a problem with them you could try volvo to see if you could get some goodwill ? Depending on circumstances you may get some sort of contribution towards the cost.. I know a few people that got goodwill even though it was outside the standard warranty with the car..
He who shouts the loudest..failing that ..as someone else pointed out the same one from FORD is cheaper..
