    Rich,

The most important areas to check (besides the obvious ones which are the same with every car) : the automatic gearbox and the air suspension.
The gearbox oil and filter (which is part of the sump) needs to be changed at 100k km and these don't come cheap.
The air suspension compressor/pipes/airbags are can be troublesome, just as the height sensors (sensors are cheap, but the airbags are only supplied with the shocks).
Range Rovers are heavy cars,so brakes, tires and suspension bushes will wear fast too, especially the rear stub axle bushes (top and bottom).
Make sure you thoroughly test the steering column adjusting motors as these give trouble.
Radio/air conditioning display is prone to go tits up and it is very expensive.
External fuel pump troubles are very common too.

These are stuff we usually come across every week.
It isn't a huge list(well...),but these can break your heart (and your wallet as well).

But Sean is right, poke around the owners forums and decide after ;)

    Thanks Gibbon,

Are you involved in the motor industry? do you work on the range rover? would you recomend I stay clear of one?

I'm in the motor trade, but in the parts side of things.
If you can afford to run a Range Rover (and by this I mean that you can afford a hefty bill as well if something expensive goes) and if you find a nice one with a good service background, than I'd say go for it.
I have many RR customers who never could go back to normal sized cars anymore.
There are many RRs out there for sale,so if you don't like one for some reason, then just walk away.
The other important thing is to find a good indy who specializes on Range Rovers.
