Exams - drug testing beforehand?

I have noticed that a lot of people tend to take drugs like ritalin, kat, speed and other bogey junk in the run up to professional/college exams. Now, I am no genius, but does that not constitute some sort of cheating?

The solution: All students must pass a drug test for any illicit substances which extends back to at least 3 months. Just because your GPA is 4.0, that does not mitigate the fact you abuse performance drugs to maintain it. I would be more impressed if you could achieve that on your own.

Personally, this is currently the worst form of cheating in my opinion. Yet goes unchecked.

have you any idea how much that would cost the state?

and lets be honest here, there aren't many drugs that would increase performance in an exam

Whats a GPA  and can i have a 6.7?

What if you study real hard?

Or your parents happen to be bright?

    Is that cheating too?

What sort of drugs would I be testing?

I reeeally don't think Speed would help you in an exam.

Grade Point Average, max is 4.0.

OT, I don't see the harm in using a drug to study if it means your retain the information. It's not a competition. Of course if the drug caused you to only retain the information for the exam (thus nullifying the exam) I might consider it cheating. Although isn't that how exams work? Learning information to pass an exam, then forgetting it and then learning what you actually need to know on the job?

    is that cheating too?

No. I would class the drug taking in the same catagory as cheat notes and the like.

Ha brillaint speed before the exams! Test them for heroin too while you are at it.

Methamphetamines came up on a drug screening of one of my best employees.
Anybody dedicated enough to take extreme drugs like that to make me a buck is A-OK by me!
I wish all my employees were on speed!

on a serious note, Ritalin/Adderall are prescribed drugs, what of the folks with legitimate reason to use them?

    Also OP, look into provigil

Of course it is. I seen enough bull**** in my college days to suggest otherwise. Bit like the running man, but instead of the possibility of death as a motivator, increased job growth motivates people. Can't imagine many undergrads view it as anything more than:

Good GPA = Good Job prospects!

    OT though

what about coffee before the exam? advantage over those who don't drink coffee and are tired after a night's studying right?

or the guy who has a smoke outside beforehand to settle his nerves compared to the non smoker who's bricking it

Enforced limits on those drugs and an outright ban on crap like ritalin.

I'm really not sure that these drugs have any real effects on the actual result of the exam, I think it mostly just gives people the thought that they have an edge so they should do better than they would have normally, the placebo effect if you will. However if you can prove otherwise... please do.

I think it's common knowledge at this point that methamphetamines increase performance and retention. If they didn't, why would people be taking them? Sneaky too.

Overdose on Adderall and come back to me with "the placebo effect". It's basically cocaine under the guise of some requirement for a nonsensical "disease" like ADHD.

I drop some LSD before my first year 1 Cultural Studies exam on Identity. I got a f.uc.king PhD for it.

Taking drugs to improve concentration and reduce anxiety in exams happens quite a bit in the states apparently but I've never heard of it happening over here.
It's nothing like speed though... I can't imagine that helping you much in an exam :pac:

With an idea like this, what the fuck have you been taking?!

I've been shooting up idealistic optimism. Reality tends to be a downer though.

They test for the use of steroids in sport because it increases muscle mass and tone.

However, no stimulant is going to improve your exam performance. If anything it would undermine your results and probably leave you writing manic, weird, crazy, rambling, rubbish that you thought was brilliant.

There'd be no point in testing anyone as nothing that you could take would enhance your mental performance. It's not weight lifting!

Also, the bigger concern would be that many students take performance degrading drugs anyway, particularly alcohol but also hash etc.

And this is scientifically proven?, I would have thought the only real plus to taking speed is the fact that you can stay awake for a very long time and not feel tired. Therefore being capable of spending more time studying therefore taking more in.

What's wrong with taking intelligence aiding drugs? If you want rocket boots, hover cars and hover trousers we have a better chance with them.
I'm for putting them in the water. The only downside would be scum getting more intelligent and robbing you better.

ADHD is a myth, yes. It's common knowledge that met drugs increase mental performance. No specific citation required.

Okay so just to clarify, ADD and ADHD are a myth and everyone should be drug tested for performance enhancing drugs before a state examination?

They can usually be prevented/eliminated/drastically-reduced by a reduction in sugars and fat in the diet, actually.

These pseudo conditions are used to justify the prescription of these drugs. It's marketing pushed as legitimate scientific enquiry, minus the science. OT though.

Drugs that are prescribed to people with them are given drugs such as Adderal, which will boost concentration.

That is such bull****. Are you saying tobacco and caffeine aren't 'real' drugs or something?

Live with an autistic person before you decide ADHD doesn't exist.

All drugs are "real". The effects vary though.

Fair enough, seems a little strong to say that these conditions do not exist though, there are many people out there who have to deal with these conditions on a day to day basis and I am sure they would not appreciate your saying that their condition is a myth. I will however agree that drugs like adderall and ritalin are often prescribed too quickly when a change of diet or other kinds of therapy may have better effects, drugs are sometimes needed to help when all other options are exhausted.

Autism exists. ADHD is Bull****. I made a mistake though, a disease can exist in nature without discovery. However, a strong scientific basis for any claim should be provided.

I remember smoking a bong before an exam once and getting a B.

It was more like a performance-reducing drug though.

They should just ban drugs I say.

My bad, I misread it. Regardless though, not all conditions are just obvious symptoms you can trace, particularly not mental conditions. They deemed many people to be just insane 30 years ago when they didn't see obvious symptoms, don't just dismiss ADHD.
