M1210 Power Jack Problem

    Hi all,

My Dell M1210 recently failed. It runs fine on battery but will not run of AC or power the battery. I have verified the battery in another laptop so that is not the problem. AC adapter is also ok.

Anyway, I thought it was probably the DC power jack so opened up the laptop and went down to the motherboard to check.

Using a multimeter, the power supply gives 19.5V while when I plug it into the power jack I only get 12.5V from the pins.

I bought another jack on ebay and it gives 19.5V from the pins.

So my question is as follows; Is the power jack faulty showing a reading of 12.5V or should this be sufficent to operate..

Unfortuantely the jack is soldered to the motherboard so is difficult to replace.

I had a similar issue with an Acer laptop, which was caused by damage to the contact between the jack and the mother board... does it look like there is physical damage to the jack contacts?

I couldn't see any damage at all.

I would've thought that there would be no voltage rather than a reduced voltage so the jack may be still working ok.
