Hey all just a heads up on developments at the Ski Club of Ireland

New Slopes - New slope is open and the Snowflex is really impressive and super surface to ski and board on . Plus it now has travelators so no walking up and down.

Oktober fest is on from the 22 & 23rd of Oktober lessons and practice sessions from 15 Euro per person all weekend.

    Details are here

    http://www.skiclub.ie/48/kids_birthday.htm

    Any questions let me know.

What kind of level would you need to be to take part in the intermediate/advanced lessons (The 4 hour course)?

I have 3 weeks experience on snow but would be timid enough on some reds when I am away (I can make my way down them but it's not pretty!). I've been to Kilternan a good few times before. Never skied from the top of the main slope but have done lots of sliding practice/drills at the very top section.

bovril; You should be ok for that session, so I would give it a bash.

bovril, can you do decent parallel turns from the bottom of the top section ? if so, then you should certainly sign up. There will be some drills that you may find difficult, however if they are beyond your ability, the instructor will set more appropriate tasks. You will certainly be facilitated and assigned to a class that is appropriate to your level.

i'm interested and in the same boat as bovril,
what exactly is involved in the intermediate/advanced snowboarding coarse?

    thanks

Derv; The intermediate courses are a mix with a number of variable factors

The people involved - will depend on the people in the group and the level of ability, you can have weak intermediaries and strong intermediaries.

General rule of thumb if you can do some form of Parallel turn on skis or the board equivalent you should be of a good enough standard to be involved.

Over the years teaching the range in standards for this type of class never ceases to surprise me. But the instructors will work around what is in front of them and the class sizes tend to be small enough that it is relatively easy to adapt for individual skiers. The great thing about the Ski Club is it allows instructors to work with individuals within a group.

sounds good, so it's 45 euro for the 4 hours?

a slightly off topic question: if i join with an ordinary membership, can i use the facilities whenever they are open, with the exception of the 'full members only' night?

    Sounds good Fattes.

As far as I can tell from past experiences, people who book lessons with their holiday really benefit from it. 2 hours or so in the morning and the rest of the day free to practice and play. That's what most people who went away with me said. But no harm just trying the intermediate lessons and if it's too much or too little then just change to a higher or lower difficulty.

I'll be going up to check it out within the next few weeks with the UCD crew, looks nice and boardable ;)

    Derv; Not exactly,

Ordinary Membership gives you a 15% reduction on classes and practice sessions

A Full Membership includes a full season ticker, which allows you to ski when ever the club is open and the use of club boots and skis and a 50% reduction on classes.

Let me know if you need anything else

    cheers for the info,
gonna get on to a few mates, and hopefully join in for the oktoberfest,

    or possibly before then!
can't really afford the full membership , so will prob just go with the 25 euro per session.

i want to learn to ride switch before i go away this year.
will probably get a lesson for that.

If you want to learn switch and it involves skis I can help :D just let me know when you are about.

If it is on a board there are 6 qualified Freestyle coaches for boarding.

Any money you spend on Lessons, Free skiing etc can then be taken from your membership if you join later in the season.

Is there any rail / box/park lessons for boarders? Is there boxes rails on the new slope?

"If you want to learn switch and it involves skis I can help."
Switch is riding regular if you're normally goofy and vice versa, riding switch on ski's ????? That I'd like to see!
    Riding backwards is "fakie".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Fattes

Skiing Switch = Skiing backwards! Different words for different sports, haven't heard it called fakie in a while mostly in N.America

There will be a Freestyle section on friday with people on hand to give both boarders and Skiers some tips on Sat afternoon

The new slope has some very specific requirements so we are currently designing and building some new rails and boxes for the Snowflex.

As soon as they are ready we will let everyone know.

Its not so long so ?
Do they plan to replace the thumb-breaker carpet on the main slope anytime ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Fattes

Thats about 40% of it behind me the drop and the other 60% is in front of me.

Snowflex sucks for high speed race carving, so can not see it being replaced any time soon.

I am sure the success of the new slope might have the club looking at the middle slope and the options available there. They have also pre landscaped the area above it.
