Yes I know, backup backup backup. Knowing isn't enough when your backup drive bricks tho.

All my photos vid's an kids projects are on this drive.
It will come on for a while get warm and disappear from explorer.

Is their anyway to get it running long enough to rescue the files (about 250 gig)?

    Is my past gone forever?

You could try a linux Live CD.
    http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

Boot your PC with it, and see if it can read the problem HDD.
If so, you can browse around and backup to USB stick, another HDD?

Will try that, but the drive doesn't even show in bios once it's hot, so don't hold much hope for finding it with anything else.
Lesson to learn backup, backup the backup and keep another backup in the cloud somewhere.

Sounds like the ambient temperature inside the PC is too warm and so the HDD is shuting down - try taking it out and connecting it using a HDD caddy.

Small point (and I don't mean to be insensitive to your loss), but it's not a backup if you don't keep the original! The point of a backup is to have it in two places.

As suggested, your best bet might be to remove the actual hard-drive from the PC and use an external enclosure.

No your not being an pr1ck about it, thats what I meant about backup your backups.

I thought I did, it turned out that the 2 partitions were on one drive. till I opened the case an couldn't find drive E.
I thought it had been swiped by some really choosy burglar with ninja skillz and tech needs.
Stuck in an old drive and their it was, in explorer, then disappeared again.
Deff a heat issue but keeping it cold long enough may require icepacks.

the last thing you need is water condensing and dripping

maybe have the drive outside the case, with a fan on it , or hairdryer (no heat !!) blowing air past a wet towel

make sure the room is cool

perhaps a gel pack or metal tray to conduct away the heat (just make sure it don't touch the electronics underneath)

ddrescue with a log file will continue from the last point , so if you only get a few minutes you might eventually get the whole drive

Not sure what you mean by this when you stuck in an old drive did that disappear too, if you have 2 hard drives disappearing try the hard drive in a different PC.

How long do you get before the hard drive disappears.

    Sorry, bit confusing.
I used the old drive to boot from, at first I could see the orignal drive, both partitions, then maby a min maby two the partitions disapear. Reboot still no signe just the boot drive. Reboot check bios, just one drive conected.
Leave for a week an the second drive is back, 2 partitions as in I see 3 drives in explorer.
    Head wrecking.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

Do you have a hard drive of equal or greater size that you can connect at the same time as the drive.

I would look try to keep the drive cool and try to clone it.

HDClone professional is very quick to clone drives or partitions.

As stated above keep it away from water.

    Something like
    http://cgi.ebay.ie/3-5-12v-HDD-Hard-Drive-Cooling-Fans-Sata-Power-Gold-/310309598706?pt=Computing_ComputerComponents_Fans_Heatsinks_SR&hash=item483fe4b5f2#ht_3460wt_922
may keep it cool long enough to copy the partitions one at a time.
