reccomend a car for approx €5000

    Hi

Im looking for a 'new' car and have around €5000 to spend and I'm looking for reccomendations.

I'm interested in a saloon (or maybe estate), diesel, engine no more than 2L and the car no older than 2002. I want to avoid extenisve running costs but asI drive quite a lot comfort is an issue.

At the moment SKoda octavia is a strongest contender - on my budget it looks like i could get one from 05-06. Another one is Avensis, but for sme reason i find them very very dull.

I also loked at Volvo s40 or Saab 93 - I quite like them but I'm not sure about reliality and cost - anyone had any experienc, s with these? Should I have a look or stay away?

Finally what other cars should I look at?

THanks in advance, any input appreciated

It's a 2.2 but the saving can pay slightly extra tax, read somewhere about them being reliable.

much better option than a 5k octavia

Saab as a company may be on there way out , so saab values could go the way of rovers.

Early diesel saabs are not great reliability wise either.

Youl'll get lots of skoda fans around here.
post up some links of cars you are thinking of looking at.

How many miles and what type of drivng are you doing now and what car are you changing out of ?

01 Passat 1.6 petrol, nothing exciting but did the job for me. Lately though it started acting up and on Friday I hit a big pot hole and it looks like a write off.

80% of my driving is m50, going to and from work, approx 15 miles at a time. The rest is leisure. I'm on shift work which mean that i'm very rarely in heavy traffic.

That's one of the cars that caught my eye:

How much a week on petrol were you spending on the Passat ?

I've seen first hand big bills for diesel engined cars lately, most recent example being....

My neighbours 2007 318 Diesel with 48000 km full history, he drives like a Granny yet ,it just had to have its turbo replaced @3k cost.

Even taximen are switching back to petrols with all the issues on modern diesels.

Don't think you need a diesel at that mileage, I do more than that every day and I switched back to petrol from diesel, as there was no real need for a diesel. Maybe just get a more economic petrol if you really want a new car? I bought an Alfa 147 1.6 and it does 40mpg easily. Why not look at a 1.6 Focus or 1.4 C4 or something? You'd have plenty of change from 5k too.

I'm not really sure to be honest with you, everyone in work seems to be reccomending diesel. I always had petrol cars so to be honest with you im not rally sure what the difference is.

As for focus and c4 - i'm quite tall and have problems with my back so comfort is a big issue for me. We use a focus in work a lot, and i know for a fact it's wee bit small for me. Id imagine c4 would be the same.

So what really is the difference in the running cost, how exactly does it work?

Everyone in work is of the Irish mentality that diesel is best, because that's what has been forced down our throats in last few years. There are unbelievable bargains on petrol to be had as a result. Far superior cars that are just being left aside because of the new diesel fetish. You aren't doing enough mileage to justify a diesel.

To give you an example, I put 30 euro petrol in my car in Carlow last night, then drove to Edenderry Co. Offaly. Drove back to the far side of Carlow a few hours later. Then drove to Kilkenny today. My reserve light will come on on the way back to Carlow but I'll make it home. That's around 160 miles for 30 euro. Not that bad, for a car with a simple engine, low tax, and was bought for 1k with full NCT in the first place!

With the mileage you're doing that Big Saab would not be worth the risk, how about something like this

This example is a bit expensive but still

Start looking at Petrol cars there is much less of a Premium to pay at purchase time, and unless you buy post 08 you'll probably pay less road tax too.
Have a Test Drive in a Kia Ceed or a hyundai i30 too to broaden your horizons, all cars have gotten bigger and a new focus is bigger than an 01 Passat.

Way overpriced first of all, and 2nd of all, not gonna match the OPs criteria. Expensive to tax as a 2.2 petrol, and only does around 30mpg.

That's why I said a bit expensive, looks minty though. And on the M50 going to work in 5th/6th gear that BMW would definitely better 30mpg...

BMW is one of the cars i don't want, no reason really, personal preference.

Having said that, the guidelines in my frst post aren't set in stone and im quite open minded.

As for Ford focus - we do use the older model in work, so i will have a look at the new one, ut i don't think there will e much choice within my budget.

Kia ceed is an interesting one, bit expensive for me, found only one close to my budget, quite like it though even though the engine is on a small side:

Whats the reliability and running costs like wih Kias?

Out of interest, what would you recommend for being far superior to any 130 brake 1.9 diesel?

Not at all trying to pick holes but like a few others I'm becoming weary of costly older diesels and if there was a better option I'd consider going for it!

It might be small capacity but they have a high specific output,,They'd be a lot more reliable than the equivalent Golf AND come with a 7 year warranty, that car you posted looks well worth a test drive.

Kia 1.4 petrol has 107 bhp and 137 nm and 1250kg your Passat is 100 bhp and 145 nm and prob similar weight

That Ceed should do mid 40's to the Gallon

    Hi folks,
Just on the Kia 7 year warranty, can someone fill me in on whether it applies to used cars also? i.e. does it follow the car after change of ownership?
Would it apply to the one mentioned above for example?

    Thanks
