    Hey guys,

My Zen Vision M sadly recently died, and I want to replace it. Unfortunately, Creative don't seem to be making them anymore. The only other option I've found so far is the Ipod classic; but I've read they are pretty unreliable? I don't want to spend 200 snots on something only for it to break after a year! Pixmania seem to be offering a 2 year warranty though...

Anyone here have any experience in this area?

I've mine since 2004, replacing the battery on the way. Never found them unreliable if they're disconnected properly.

    Don't go near pixmania.........

I've had one for 3 and a half years now, no issues, and thats with fairly heavy usage and plenty hops off the ground. No idea if they're any less reliable now than then though, you'd imagine not, completely the same form factor and everything.

Ny the way, if you are considering getting one, wait until October 4th, whatever you do, there really should be some kind of update for the classic, seeing as theres been literally nothing for 2 years now, which is odd for an apple product. Have seen rumours of a HDD boost to 220gb

oh yeah, apple built their entire empire on that fact that this product was so unreliable.

Where are you getting this info from? Do you know why Zen went out of business? because apple completely.dominated them

Hey man, thanks for your reply. Why do you think I should avoid Pixmania? They seem to be offering a pretty good deal, and are offering a two year warranty.

I've read several user reviews calling the product unreliable. I'm glad you are confident in the IPod's reliability though, I'm probably going to get one. And Creative are still in business as far as I can see :)

I love my old classic, although I never use it anymore since I got my iPhone, it is one of the best things I ever spent money on and would never part with it. Tough as old boots, I used to bring it everywhere with me and dropped it so many times, even down the stairs a few times. It never broke and is still going strong. Well worth the money and you can't go wrong with the storage, I had mine filled with ripped DVD's twas brilliant.

I have the 160 gb version, the model released before the latest one, 2007 I think. I've had it 2 years, bought it on special offer from Currys, it was a display model in constant use for at leat a year before I got it. Its still working perfectly, you won't go wrong shelling out for one. One of the best buys I've made in the last few years, no question.

I used to have a Zen Vision M. Got an iPod Classic 120GB bout 3 years back now. It's grand, never had any problems with it.

The only thing that's missing on it that I had on the Vision M is the Custom EQ. The built in ones on the iPod are adequate, but I miss being able to fine tune the sound to what I want.

Lol Creative are still in business, I think the media players they have going now are called the XFI 2 i believe.

I might get killed for saying it here, but I'd look at getting a 2nd hand Vision M on eBay. They might be a good few years old now, but I think they're still a great device, despite being about 5 years old or so.

Agree about the custom EQ, but even that aside, I think the sound quality is better on the Creative.

have an 80Gb one that I got second hand a couple of years ago at least at this stage and have never had any problems with it, so maybe second hand maybe something to look at

Have a 160 gig one for the last two years and it has never failed me despite some of the knocks it got. I'm going to wait and see what happens next month as regards an update to the ipod line.
The classic didn't get any update last year so really it is just speculation as to whether it will get an update or if it is officially removed from the product line. If it doesn't get an update I will consider buying another and hang on to it in case something happens my current one.

Have the Ipod 160GB since it came out , its been dropped, stood on and even left outside for a night ( Drunken Camping Trip;)) and i swear the back of it has more dents than the moon. But it still works perfectly.

There very reliable and if you need the storage then definitely shell out for one

Have a look around bargain alerts/consumer issues. It something goes wrong they are a frigging nightmare to deal with.

Just so we are clear here, Marketing and Design were the reason Apple dominated it had nothing to do with the reliability of either product.

iTunes was the reason in my eyes. It just made things so simple for users, something that Windows Media Player didn't do.

A mate has had a classic for years. Great piece of kit and never give trouble. However remember they have a spinning hard drive, so they are more susceptible to damage unlike a solid state iTouch.

Bought one (80GB) in 2008 and a line started to appear in the screen after a few months. It was replaced and I've had no real issues with (save for a very occasional freeze). Very happy with it, sometimes use it when running (not always great even at maximum volume if listening to a podcast, but I generally don't use decent headphones when I'm running). Saying that, I don't know if it would be my first choice if I needed a replacement, possibly because of the cost, but I'll see. iTunes seems to have a lot of detractors, but I don't mind it.

the classic is fairly sturdy, and the latest model is even sturdier than the last. My last ipod went kaput as I used to when running and the HD kicked in. Have had no issues with latest model.

I have the 80gb one since launch and never had a problem with it! Since i got the iphone its been a bit neglected though. I soon fixed that a few years ago with the arrival of the fm transmitter. Now my ipod classic lives happily in the glovebox of my car :D

Will it be the touch phasing out the classic, and the nano phasing out the shuffle?

Would seem to be. Particularly the Shuffle and the Nano being so similar. As storage gets bigger and bigger on flash, there is less reason to continue on with more delicate HD technology.

The Classic is definitely for the chopping block. At the iPod event last year, Jobs said "we are updating the whole iPod line today" and then never mentioned the Classic. lol. Everyone was expecting it to be gone once the store came back.
