Parking in NUIM, North or South..... Impossible?

Is it just me or does anybody else find it ultra difficult to find parking on the north campus but more especially the south campus. I was in there today around 9.45, drove around and around, nothing. drove over to the North campus same story, so in the end I parked at the post office and walked in the rain down there. I would have even paid €2 or €3 for parking even though I had the disc but there was no spaces. What a waste of €40.

Parking permits come into effect from Monday so I'd say there will be a lot less cars around from then on. Hopefully, because I don't want to have to walk in the rain either :D. I had to be down at the college for 9:30 Weds and Thurs because when I went down at 10:30 on Tues it took me a good 20mins to find a space!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it won't be any better next monday. If anything it is worse when permit parking is enforced because you may see lots of spaces in car parks on campus that your permit may not entitle you to park in e.g you might see empty spaces in the staff section but can't park there if you've a student permit. Apcoa are to thank for reducing the numbers of spaces and charging you at the same time. But yes the parking situation was diabolical before them too. If you live near public transport use it but if not theres really not much you can do. I feel your pain!

I have to agree, I think things will get far worse. There is very limited student parking on the South Campus.

I quite enjoy heading in early to get parking though. Love watching the campus slowly creep to life as I listen to the radio, or have a walk.

I'll just have to go in early most EVERY morning... NUIM strikes again! lol

It's not even really an NUIM specific issue, parking is an issue for pretty much every college in the country. In Maynooth there has been a massive increase in car usage in NUIM in the last 5/6 years, because students (or their parents) had the extra cash to buy their own car and Maynooth experienced massive growth in popularity so student & staff numbers increased a lot. When I started there were around 6000 students, 1000 staff. Now it's 8500+ students, 1500+ staff.

If you're not in before 10am, sometimes even 9:30am you'll have a hard time finding a parking space. That being said, last year there was nearly always a spot to be had in the paid-parking areas, even if it's just for an hour or two before moving on to find a spot. I'd say it's harder to get a spot in the staff parking because once it hits 9:30 they're gone, and most likely gone until 5pm :)

A Dutch friend once said to me
"Your not made of Sugar, you won't melt in the rain"

For a place that rains so much, nobody ever seems to be prepared for it.

You should have told him that makes no sense and given out to him for poor grammar. Feckin' Dutch.

Well I asked her and apparently its a Dutch saying, so I won't knock marks off for that.

It always bothers me how ill-prepared people are for some bad weather, despite the fact that they never stop complain how wet and miserable it is.

There'd be more spaces if those apes weren't parking on the ramp in Dunnes car park last year.

I don't think people were parking on the ramps, I think it was the problem of them walking back up them to get out of the underground car park.

there were a good few spots around today.. probably people still waiting on permits

Yep people were walking up the ramps. If I don't get in for abound half 9 I usually don't find a spot. So if you have a lecture between 10am and 2pm you'd nearly be better getting in for the day. After 3pm the place empties a little.

Parking sucks right now though, it was like this last year.

Why dont people just park in the Manor Mills when they cant get parking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭Scealta_saol

Because it's 3 hour max and they have GSLS monitering the car park at very random times clamping.. Signs on entry that they are clamping now...

Really, well if they clamp me they wont be getting paid! I have an email from the center management saying that I parking is free for as long as you want when I emailed and asked weather the max stay was two hours.

You know they are allowed to change this at any time and not email you about it, right?

If the signs change then no problem. But if they continue to use the same ones that I wont be paying.

Good luck with that, but the only way you have a leg to stand on with that email beyond the day or week you received it is if it also contains a sentence to the effect of "We will notify you in the event of this policy changing"

They could just as easily say that they had put up the signs in advance of clamping coming in, and decide they have started clamping between the dayof your mail, and the one you get done.

btw - had a look at the signs in manor mills underground parking today. It's actually G4S (Not GSLS like I OP'd) and the signs say no all day parking and 2 hour max stay.

Quick question about parking! I have no permit yet (stil waiting on that email) and have a lecture from 5 to 7. The website says the pay and display hours are from 8:30 to 17:00 so does this mean I can park anywhere without a permit after 5? Just want to be sure cos I definitely cannot afford the €80 clamping release!

I am not sure about parking anywhere (there should be a similar time indication on the signs of the permit car parks if so), but it means either of the pay and display car parks will be unpoliced after 5, so you can definitely park at either Callan Building, or the rugby pitch car park then, if the hours are as indicated. I would double check the local signage to be sure though!

You should be ok to park anywhere after 5pm according to this
Use of NUI Maynooth parking spaces is for staff, students, visitors and other accredited users only.

Parking is only permitted in designated marked car park spaces on campus. Vehicle owners infringing on parking regulations will be liable to have their vehicles clamped

Enforcement of this policy will apply between 08.30-17.00 hours, Monday-Friday during term time, and on any other days at the discretion of the University.

Apologies if I've been missing something obvious but how would Manor Mills go about identifying the cars who have stayed a couple of hours? It's usually only 75% full in there so I'm not sure why they would strictly enforce clamping. From my experience I buy things in Eason's and Dunnes on my way to the car which I wouldn't normally do had I got a spot on campus. Turning a blind eye is probably hard for them to swallow but if they want to keep footfall...

You'd be surprised how easy it is to spot the same car parking in the same carpark and leaving it there for several hours each day.

I'd def use it for an hour or two but i wouldn't chance leaving it there for a day.

Was down in south campus this morning, guy from APCOA seemed very clamp happy, he had clamped around 3 or 4 cars (to be fair one of them was on the grass) when I went into my lecture. But the others were legit, parking at the side of Logic, on the side where there were no yellow lines (2 parked there) and one parked on the muddy area towards the green. These three cars weren't breaking any rules as far as I know (I checked the permits, they were valid), so I'm confused as to why he clamped them. Came back a few hours later, they were all declamped though :O ... reckon the guy made a mistake? Haha

There is a guy in the car park keeping an eye out for people with bags. I assume he is on the lookout ten mins before and after the hour.

I am not a student this year in Maynooth, but I called down to the town today and the stretch of cars out the road to Kilcock has never been that bad, not to far away from the graveyard. I assume it is a combination between the people working in the village and students who cannot park on campus, but if the Gards start clamping, there will be mayhem. I do not even want to think about parking problems with the graduations.

Yep. All students mail as follows:
Re: Illegal Parking on Kilcock Road,

    Dear Colleague,

The University has been advised by local Gardai that enforcement of the Traffic Bye-laws re illegal parking on Kilcock Road will be carried out from next Monday 17th October 2011.

Please be aware that overflow parking for NUI Maynooth permit holders is available at the grounds of Maynooth GAA Club, Moyglare Road, (76 car spaces)

This facility is only a three or four minute walk from the North Campus.

I keep getting them about s**t like this, when I really have no interest in it at all. I wish they'd exclude students abroad from this sort of stuff.
    Maybe we should swap. :pac:

Is there any provision made fore students who are waiting for the permit application to be processed? I applied for mine this monday just gone and have not heard anything, except the email regarding the gardaí :(

On a side note, can someone clarify what the rules are regarding that? In other words, are we allowed park on the kilcock road in a safe and orderly manor, avoiding the grassy verge like so many have done before and after the lights or is the road to be kept completely clear? I have been parking on the road for the past 2 weeks as my bus route has actually become more expensive than petrol to me, and come monday, I don't know what I'll do. :(

I'm pretty sure you are not allowed park on the Kilcock road full stop. Almost any of the places where I have seen people parking "in a safe and orderly manor, avoiding the grassy verge like so many have done before and after the lights" they have actually been parked in cycle lanes (makes that manner not seem so safe and orderly now) and/or hard shoulders, neither of which are intended or permitted for parking in.

By rights the Gardai are under no obligation to provide this notice, and could start enforcement right now if they wanted, as the parking has always been illegal, but they are giving people a chance to correct their behaviour first.

As far as your permit goes, why did you leave it so late as Monday to apply? And I'd suggest following it up with APCOA if there's a number for them on the site.

The place I am indeed talking about are on the hard shoulder before the roundabout.

And the reason for leaving it so late was that my choice was either paying for the permit or the electricity bill.

So have the permits and P&D actually helped at all or are they just causing more problems by having people park all the way down towards the graveyard?? are people getting spots on campus?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,645 ✭✭✭Daemos

To be honest it was the same last year - people parking on the road until an email gets sent out. The only reason they're as far as the graveyeard this year is because there isn't room right outside the college anymore
