Hi, not sure if this is the right forum to post this into.

O2 have recently stopped twitter alerts. I was just wondering does any other network - 3, Meteor, Vodafone have a twitter alerts service?

    Thax

If you meant the notifications sent directly to your phone, I get them from Vodafone with no charge.

I wonder how the networks get paid for the Tweets sent as SMS across their networks?

Maybe they make their money back on charging for data used when you log into twitter to reply to the message you received?

The messages received encourage you to use Twitter on your phone and not just log in from your computer.

Probably costs them very little to send the messages anway.

I asked twitter about this problem and they came back to me saying that they are having a technical problem with O2 IRL and that their technicians are working on fix. That was about a fortnight ago.

At a guess, as they are only sending on their own networks and where there is capacity on such networks, it isn't actually costing them anything to transmit an individual tweet thus the ability to receive tweets via SMS by a customer may have been introduced to give some form of competitive advantage over others in the market (excepting whatever intial investment to establish some sort of tweet to sms gateway). This, I suspect is now overtaken by the proliferation of smart phones with ip based twitter services, including basic mobile browser based access, and whatever infrastructure it took to send tweets via sms is probably now an overhead and a big PITA to continue with for an ever decreasing market as more and more avail of more modern means of picking up their twitter activity.

    /just my guess :)

True, plus only 10% or so of the population use Twitter and less than that on mobile. However, they might be quite 'tweet' intensive.
