Cinema film selection policy

Could anybody shed some light on how cinemas select what movies to show? My local 8 screen omniplex in Tralee is unbelievably frustrating. Its not showing Drive which is one of the best reviewed films of the year, it didn't show the inbetweeners (fair enough its not a cinematic masterpiece but a great tv show nonetheless). The social network and the Departed springs to mind also.

This week they are showing horrible bosses for something like the 8th week. Cars 2 and planet of the apes have been knocking around for 4 or 5 weeks, the guard and god help us - the Smurfs. I cannot understand how they can still be making money off these movies and still let Drive and the inbetweeners slip by  Are they just not taking any chances and showing MOR drivel (I don't include the guard in this) or is it an issue with distributors?

A couple of years ago there was a huge movie coming out and I was dying to see it, it didn't show in the Tullamore Omniplex at all and I was curious so I just asked them why. They said something about having a 'falling out' with the supplier so they weren't able to show it.
So purely speculation on my part, but it seems that whoever they buy the movies from can choose who they sell it to?

Yeah, this is usually due to a falling out between the cinema and the distributor. Any films from that distributor won't be screened by that cinema.

It's frustrating when people are willing to pay to see movies and this sort of thing goes on and then the industry complains about illegal movie downloading.
