What is the situation when one misses Mortgage payments spread sporadically over a long amount of time.

IE: Missed payments sporadically over a 4 year period. (14 payments). But in the last year have been keeping on top of these mortgage payments and have not missed any. Would the bank normally go after people making no effort to pay or should one really pay do his utmost to get on top of the arrears. Do you have to miss a set amount in a set period of time for the bank to take serious action? At the moment i have been using any excess cash to drive down a hefty visa bill. Should i divert these funds to mortgage arrears?

You need to go talk to your bank about your situation. Be honest with them and discuss what you can do. Take a look here:

If you're working with them and being honest they are obliged to help you under the new code of conduct. If you're being evasive it could work against you.
