    either the thermostat
    or the overheat has tripped
    or faulty timer
    or faulty immersion switch
    or burnt out connection
    or blown fuse/tripswitch
or element gone(unlikely if nothing blown)

thanks for speedy reply meercat, tested switch continuity all good there,no overheat on the stat so cant be that either!i just find it strange that if it is the element why its not tripping the breaker!!

sometimes those overheat switches are un noticable
    how old is the immersion
have you 230v to each element

doesnt look to old mate had a good look around for the overheat and could not see one anywhere,i know on my one at home its quite noticeable!

symptoms do seem to point to the overheat though any idea when they started putting them on the stat?

    4-5 years on some makes
have you checked voltage to elements
you hardly have a clip on amp meter to check loads

if there is no hot water in cylinder then there should be continuity through the stat

Faulty Stat, stat should be closed

continuity is all well and good, but it's an ohmic value you want to see. At a guess you'd prob want to see about 40Ohms through the element.

18 ohms through the bath element, 26 through the sink. They are roughly what to expect.

Through the stat which is what was mentioned was missing should be 0 ohms.
