Have heard the idea bandied about for a while, but the IOC don't like the flame going walk-a-bout once it has got to the destination country. Sounds like it will be doing the same tour as QEII got going around the regular state visit destinations, will it be taken for a pint of Guinness as well?

Not at all, haven't we gone beyond that? Didn't the Queen get a great Irish welcome from our Presidential candidate, Marty?

    Great news
I wonder who's back you'd have to scratch (a lot) to get on the carriers list???
I was practicing at breakfast this morning with a kitchen roll- I'd be very good

I think you've misunderstood the flame thing. The person gets to carry it for a mile or so, not we get to set fire to the person with it?

but everyone loves Bertie! Sure wouldn't he be a certainty for the presidency if it wasn't for certain unfortunate events that happened after he left office and had nothing at all to do with him?

But this flame thing relates to elite athletics. Does it really matter? :)

Sonia to carry the flame when it hits these shores.

Sonia O'Sullivan will be the first Olympic torchbearer through Dublin when it arrives in the city in June.

The President of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Pat Hickey, also confirmed that Olympic medallists Michael Carruth and Wayne McCullough will be involved in handing over the torch at the border. Schoolchildren from Newry and Dundalk will also take part.

A short relay will take place in Howth, where the headquarters of the Olympic Council is located before it is taken to Dublin city centre.

However, it has been confirmed that plans for a special concert in Dublin to mark the occasion have been cancelled due to the financial circumstances.

The Minister of State with Responsibility for Sport, Michael Ring, said the decision was made following talks with the Olympic Council of Ireland and Dublin City Council.

But he said he expected thousands of people to line the streets of Dublin to witness the event
