Turbo go bang!

    '06 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI.
Right, I think it finally has blown.
After months of whining at me, I now have a red warning light, no power and the whine has gone.
So now I need to look at replacing/rebuilding the turbo, can anyone recommend where I can find an aftermarket/recon/second hand/turbo repair kit?
Can I recon it myself at home? How hard is it to fit?
Any suggestions (the cheaper, the better, money's too tight to mention;))?

    Forget DIY rebuild.

Recon is safest best bet. Can't comment how hard it is to replace on a Focus, should be a nut and bolt job but other stuff may be in the way.

You were lucky not to wreck your engine as if the turbo oil seals had gone the engine would have raced away to oblivion on it's own oil!

Right, getting quotes from various sources for new/recon/2nd hand turbos.
    Only one thing:
I have an engine error light (most likely related I guess;)), does anyone know where to get the car plugged in in Limerick that doesn't charge mad money to hook up a laptop for 2 minutes?

    All false alarm!
Due to the fact that power was down by 80%, I simply assumed the turbo had packed up.
But I was assured by friends that the turbo failing would be accompanied by massive clouds of smoke and bits being blown out of the exhaust, but that was not the case.
An error code readout pointed at glowplugs, replaced all 4, still no joy.
Then checked everything for continuity and leaks, and whaddayaknow, there was a faulty connection that was letting current leak to the block.
Isolated the connection from the block, no more error code and full power is back!
    Phew!

I should get that turbo changed to be honest, mines doing the same thing, changing in on thursday :(

Can cause more damage which can cost you more in the long run. Nothing like shards of compressor in your engine to ruin your day! More then likely it will get to your intercooler and stay there.

The same what? Mine wasn't doing anything, it was something else causing me to lose power. It has been whining for a year now, but no way can I afford to do anything about it, but it's not getting any worse. So taking the FF approach, sit on my hole and waiting for it to fix itself or go away.:p

    Thanks very much dr.fuzzenstein....

I've emailed them for a quote....

I did find another guy in Drogheda that seems fairly cheap too...

So things could be looking up.....:D

    Ok..Just to update this....turbo-tech.ie will be looking for €380 for a full re-build...That's including a 1 year warranty,,and delivery,,with My old turbo unit part-exchanged.

    Sounds good huh....

Sounds about right, Ford quoted me E700 for a recon and about a grand and a half for a new, genuine Ford unit. (I could be a little off, but that's the ballpark).
If you fit it yourself, it's easier on labor costs.
