Tus Scheme and a Quilified Adult.

I was asked to participate in the interview process of the Tus scheme. After a bit of a discussion, the girl on the phone told me that I would be elegible to claim for the full amount for a Dependant Adult, and full rate for children, even though my wife earns nearly 3 times the limit for a Dependant Adult.

    From citizens information site http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/irish_social_welfare_system/claiming_a_social_welfare_payment/claiming_an_increase_in_your_social_welfare_payment_for_an_adult_dependant.html

To claim an Increase for a Qualified Adult you must be getting a social welfare personal payment and in the case of all social welfare payments your adult dependant must:

Not have a social welfare payment in his/her own right except for Disablement Benefit, Occupational Injuries Death Benefit in respect of an orphan, Child Benefit, Guardian's Payment (Contributory), Guardian's Payment (Non-Contributory) Domiciliary Care Allowance, Supplementary Welfare Allowance, Foster Care Allowance or Half-rate Carer's Allowance.

    And

With the exception of Jobseeker's Allowance (JA), Pre-Retirement Allowance (PRETA), Disability Allowance (DA), or Farm Assist (FA) have gross earnings or income (before tax and PRSI deductions) of less than €310. If your adult dependant is earning less than €100 you will get a full Increase for a Qualified Adult . If your adult dependant is earning between €100 and €310 you will get a reduced-rate of IQA. If your adult dependant is earning more than €310 you will not get an Increase for a Qualified Adult.

Am I missing something, or is she wrong? How can my wife earn way above the treshold, and yet qualify as a dependant for TUS?

I don't get it in my Jobseekers Allowance, so how can I get it now?

As a dependant adult my partner was awarded €188 + (29/2 for dependant child) €14.50 = €202, while on BTEA. I was also above the threshold.

But this is the thing. She's working earning more than the threshold. How can she be a dependant then? I just acn't see how that is.

I can check this out tomorrow and revert back if thats ok but it seems very unlikely to me.

Yep, that'd be cool. It seems unlikely to me too, but she was adamant. I even said to her that no matter how much my wife was earning, I'd still get the full Adult Dependant rate for her, and she said yes.

    From Q12 here:
    http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Schemes/RuralandCommunitySupports/Pages/tusfaq.aspx#12
It would suggest to me you only receive the Qualified Adult rate if you have an entitlement to it - if your wife's earnings are above the limit, then you won't receive the increase.
Where an entitlement exists, a participant will receive the maximum rate payable in respect of a qualified adult.

Checked this out for you and unless she is already on your claim as an adult dependant she will not be added. Also when participating on a TUS scheme there is an additional €20 top up paid to participants.

Thanks a lot eastbono. I knew about the €20, but it was the adding of her as a dependant adult that baffled me. I was assured on the phone by the person on the phone that she had checked it out and she would be added. Just didn't make sense that suddenly she could be classed as a dependant adult, even thought she was above the treshold. Not only that, but I would also get the full rate for the children. Doesn't make sense to me that. Where would I go to explain to the person that told me over the phone that she can't be added as a dependant adult?

Well if you have this persons name you could phone up and tell her that she got the facts wrong.... was it you local sw office that you phoned? Very annoying if it was and she did not check out the facts... that it why I told you last night that I would check it out properly but I thought day one that I was right but had to check it out with colleagues.

Yep, it was my local office alright, and I do have her name. Thing was, she said she had checked it out, because I had brought up with her already when she told me I was entitled to it.

Thanks a lot for your help, eastbono, especially taking the time to find out that for me. Much apperciated.

    eastbono, just to clarify,

Does that mean that an adult dependant on a jobseekers allowance claim, would then get the full rate of 124, if the claimant participated in a Tus scheme. Even though they may only have qualified for a partial rate on the original JA claim.

    Seems odd.

Jobseekers allowance is different to Jobseekers benefit. Jobseekeeks benefit ada is governed by the adas earnings and can be full rate/reduced rate or nil rate depending on the adas earnings. If you are referring to jobseekers benefit then the full rate would not be applied for an ada if it is already at a reduced rate.
With jobseekers allowance there is always a full ada rate but any earnings the ada has are taken into account when means are being assessed.

    Hope this answers your question.

No its not the local sw office. Names are randomly picked.

I,d imagine the search criteria of the pc programme would have the skill set requirements of the work required, in order to search for qualified people for the posts.

Otherwise, it really is a random approach, and has no other regard, than looking for bodies to fill the posts:D

I looked up the fas website under the jobseekers area to see what tus is. They are looking for 2 people to work in an after school program in Athlone West for 19.5 hours a week.
I live a distance away from this ce scheme and have no experience in this area. I feel that due to the amount of time I have been signing on that my name along with others has been picked out for this.
I did not like the tone of this letter, it's lack of information about what your applying for and then if you don't apply you will lose money.
I hope this information is of help to the others who got this letter.

I have seen one of the letters. You are not actually applying for anything. You have been selected for an interview. The letter doesn,t offer you anything that you will have a choice on, as far as I can see.

I'm four months into a TUS Scheme. I had to move to Athlone to participate on the scheme and the rent costs €65 per week. I was wondering if I'd be entitled to a reduced rate of JA on top of this as I'm only working part-time. I'd apply for rent allowance but I can envision being left awaiting a decision for months.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help us out. My mother has travelled abroad with my little brother and I am left here with my little sister under 17 about to go college. I am a MSC student myself and I don't think ill have enough from my savings (from my summer job) to cater for her at xmas, Easter and Summer holidays when she comes home.Besides, my mother has made clear that she has left Ireland for good and we should be old enough to cater for ourselves. PLEASE HELP! MY SUMMER JOB IS ALMOST OVER. IS THERE A WAY I CAN BECOME HER GUARDIAN AND GET SOME SUPPORT?
