gambling transactions on statements needed for rent allowance application.

Hello, I have been on rent allowance for the last year and am due a review now.
They have asked me to provide 6 months bank statements.

A potential problem is that about 5 months ago for a period of around 3 months i was gambling a lot, there are loads of different transactions from different online gambling sites. Some of them are for quite large sums, overall i think i was about 2500 up from the gambling, in the last 2 months i havent gambled at all, i still have over 1000 which i have transferred to my savings account.

I was wondering if they could use this as a reason to stop the rent allowance? Is it ok to have savings? I was thinking of just providing the last few months statements without the gambling transactions and see if they accept just that.

Would they ask to see a statement of my savings account as there are large sums transferred to and from that. Im quite worried i was delighted to win the money but it would be a disaster if they stopped the rent allowance because of it.

Does anyone have any ideas for what i should do? Maybe i am worrying too much, maybe i should just provide the 6 months statements and write a note explaining the transactions.

Any advice would be great, thanks

When they asked to see your bank statements in order to review if you are still entitled to Rent Supplement, they clearly mean statements from all your accounts, be they current or savings or in banks or credit unions. Noone here can give you any kind of advice other than to declare your income over the relevant period.

:mad:Well Buzztastic I think you should be ashamed to admit how dishonest you are. You have a bloody Savings Account with large sums in it and you're claiming rent allowance!! It's the likes of you have this country on it's knees and are making gob****es out of those of us who go out to work and are struggling to make ends meet. A Savings Account - chance would be a fine thing!!:mad:

A savings account i had from when i was working, im not going to delete my savings account because i lost my job.

And I think you are being a bit harsh, i won the money by GAMBLING a SMALL amount of money and using the winnoings to bet again ultimately turning it into around 2500, when i was on that winning streak should i have said no i better stop now thats enough, its not fair on everyone else to make money from bookies.

Theres just over 1000 in the savings account. Im happy to declare it but it would be a bit mad if i won money on gambling and then wasnt entitled to rent allowance which would be worth over 5000 because of it and ultimately not be able to pay my rent. I gambled its not a crime, i wouldnt mind taking a reduced allowance, i was asking for practical advise here, or if people had any experience similar to this, not to be judged by people on their high horses.

1,000 is not a lot these days. Especially as you do not know the circumstances under which the op is under. If they have kids etc. The money may be towards christmas or school or something so do not judge when you do not know the situation. It is certainitly not needed in the recession times and shame on you for saying it.

OP i don't have a clue how it will affect you but if you have to send them in you may have no choice but to just wait and see how it plays out and see what the CWO says. Sorry I couldn't be more help

You are allowed 20 thousand in savings without affecting any entitlements, they work out an income from it and take that tiny bit off - a friend of mine has ten thousand in savings (inherited from her deceased mother) and she has lost I think about eight pounds from her benefits. She is a single mother who has just been forced to give up a job she has held for ten years due to childcare costs ie, she couldn't afford to work any more. So this info is up to date.

Is that not just for social welfare? The OP is talking about rent allownance. Im not 100% sure at all but I know you can have 10,00 in savings without affecting your benefits but thats just for JSA etc. CWO is different
