I have a dell XPS 15 and was thinking of updating to a SSD for the speed and better proformance. However I still need a lot of Space. So here's what I was thinking of doing..buying a SSD removing the current HDD..removing the optical drive (think I've used it once in the last 6 months) buying a HDD caddy and putting the HDD instead of the optical drive and buying a caddy for the optical drive and Turing it external..thus in theory having the system And the space..

Now to my question.. Is this a good idea will I still get the full benofot of the SSD or will the HDD be a sort of bottleneck for the system as nearly all files will be located on it short of programs and system files.

The OS and other programs you want to use often will still be on the SSD so I would assume you should still get a good performance gain. A lot of high-end laptops are already coming with this configuration (120 gig SDD + 500/750 gig HDD) so I'd say fire ahead! will probably give you a huge performance boost :)

I haven't used a computer with a SSD yet but have heard the difference is unbelievable.

Sorry for jumping in guys, but is there any sites you'd reccomend for buying hard drives.

I'm looking to get a Seagate Momentus 750GB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal, for my MacBook pro.

    Any help appreciated.

I've never had an issue with this lot.

Okay, im pretty sleepy, but am i right in saying that you want to put the hard disk in the place of the optical drive? Or have i got this completely wrong?

The optical drive and hard disk use different connections so it's not going to be plug and play...

There's a strong possibility i'm being stupid here...

Yes I'm taking out the optical drive and putting a 2nd Hardrive in it's place. They both use the Sata interface and a caddy can be bought to fit the drive intothe bigger area

Ah i see, i wasn't aware there was a caddy. I thought you were trying to botch it!

Sounds like a plan to me.

I recently got a Samsung RF711. Great laptop - really good spec, but one of the things I like about it is that is has 2 hard drives. So I am ordering a SSD to replace one of them. That way I get the performance benefits and I still have a 500GB HDD, and the blue ray drive.

I got this for my Unibody Macbook after doing lots of research:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004APRLTY/ref=oss_product

Has it's own housekeeping routines which is handy for OSX as it doesn't support TRIM. (Lion does but not on 3rd party drives)

€100 bills with free SuperSaver Delivery.

I've done the exact same thing with my dell laptop. Ripped out the hard drive and put in an SSD. Then took out the optical drive and replaced it with a hard drive in a caddy. My laptop is a slot loading drive so the caddy didn't fit at first so I had to rip it apart to make it fit, that was fun. :)

OS and commonly used apps go on the SSD, data and things like that go on the hard drive. Use this (http://lifehacker.com/tips/forum?comment=19221871) to move your user folder to the hard drive. If that doesn't work just move the individual folders instead.

You should definitely go with it, I've never looked back since doing it.

Definitely thinking about it. Seen even the Hybrid drives at the store, and they boot up amazingly fast and get to a work-ready state in under a 30 seconds - browser launched, pages loading properly. So I can imagine what a full SSD is capable of, I'm just happy to keep watching them come down in price. I'll probably hold off until I need to do my first major reformat, which going by the way Win7 operates, probably won't need to happen for another year.
