Winter wedding & Little touches

Hi Brides (and perhaps some grooms)!

Would LOVE to hear from anyone who has been to /is planning or has had a winter wedding that wowed them!?

For instance - a friend of mine went to a winter wedding that didn't start until 5pm so that the church was dark except for candles - I really really like the idea but 5pm is too feckin late!

Also would welcome ideas for little touches - not just major decorative ideas like ice sculptures!

    Any thoughts appreciated :)

I'm just building ideas at the moment - still have a long time to wait!

I have been to a wedding earlier in the day during winter which had candles and it was lovely, remember churches are not well lit even on the sunniest of days. Perhaps mulled wine and hot chocolate on arrival would be a nice touch.

Have Winter by Vivaldi in your music programme! :)

A cousin of mine walked up the aisle to In The Bleak Mid Winter. It was absolutely stunning! :)

I am having a winter wedding too.
I am already fantasising about a light snow shower and can almost smell the mulled wine:)

    Thanks for the ideas!! :)

is mise astra - mulled wine is well and truely ordered - perfect cure from the crisp air!! Good tip on the hot choc - so far the non-alco guests are only getting tea & coffee!

Moonbeam - I imagine a light snow fall too...let's hope the winter of 2010 doesn't strike again....although if it does ...4x4's / tractors / snow ploughs and we're off!!

AoifeCork - thanks for the music tip...sounds truely beautiful!!

I've been looking at pictures of winter themes...for example these pics: http://marzime.hubpages.com/hub/_BellaMevents_WINTER-WONDERLAND

i love the branch centre piece idea but as i'm not the most creative of people they may end up looking a bit ridiculous (broken sticks in a glass) so perhaps i'll stick with flowers!!

What kind of colours are you guys thinking.....I really like the elegance of silver or gold for winter but I also like really rich purples...so will probably end up with a purple winter theme...if there is such a thing!! Has anyone seen that before?

If you want any more Winter music suggestions, PM me.. I've loads of tricks in the bag :)

Did a wedding on the 4th of January this year, the bridemaids had full length cadbury purple gowns and ivory fur little jacket/stole things. The bride wore purple flowers in her hair and her dress was ivory so it looked absolutely stunning!! The grooms men teamed that purple with gold waistcoats then and it was absolutely amazing. Deep purple is DEFINITELY a winner at winter weddings. And most people can carry the colour!

Was at a winter wedding couple of years ago and the bride wore a fur-like throw over her shoulders, it looked cosy and pretty.

Your gift, if ye are doing them, to the groomsmen could be little engraved hipflasks filled with whiskey/brandy, it may help keep ye all warm if ye are doing pics outside!!

I was at a winter wedding a few years ago, bride wore ivory, instead of a veil she wore an ivory Scottish widows like cape that was lined with Chocolate brown.
Bridesmaids were chocolate brown with ivory lined capes and ivory hand muffs instead of flowers. Stunning and very different.
They were the envy of all the guests because it was a skinning cold day.:)

Fabulous ideas!! - perhaps I could have a hip flask for myself too - calm the nerves & keep warm ;)

I love the hand muffs idea - my bm's aren't too keen on anything faux-fur related at the moment but we'll see if they can be convinced!!

Oh that sounds lovely - you could have a Russian theme with all the fur and the fur muffs! (Fake, of course! :D)

Purple and silver sounds great for a winter wedding. You could also have touches of winter white too.

sparklers, mulled wine/hot chocolate, roasted nuts/marshmallows, a blazing log fire on arrival at your reception venue, snuggly mittens, fur-lined boots, you can get away with more dramatic make-up looks (red lips, deep purple nails), candles/fairy lights, holly, hats for bridemaids...just think of all of your favourite things about winter and see how you can work some of them into your day/theme. Good luck :)

Thanks Leehoffman - great suggestions!! Ooooh hopefully all these ideas will spark some creativity that I have hidden deeeep down! :)

I'm thinking I want lots of candles - lets hope the venue and church don't mind wax!!

I was at a winter wedding where the bridesmaids carried candlelit lanterns instead of flowers. It looked really well with the winter theme.

It is generally dark pretty early in winter so I think if you just don't turn on the church lights and put up lots of candles you will get the atmosphere you are looking for. And tell the sacristian that the candles are non - drip, its just a little white lie! Ikea do really nice chunky church pillar candles which are very reasonable.

I never thought of holly or hats for my bridesmaids.
