Getting good reviews already - mixture of YHF and Summerteeth according to one or two I saw.
Listened to a bit of it on NPR last night. Not bad at all but think it'll be a grower like YHF, not an album to love immediately.

i really like the opening track "art of almost" - wilco always seem to be able to pull off interesting guitar solos which i love

I think it is a real grower. It lacks a bit of punch in places, but quality nonetheless.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 11,382 Mod ✭✭✭✭lordgoat

Just popped it on the old record playing device.

Bout halfway through and it's good. Great in places but i'll have to sit with it for a while.

I'm liking this a lot. The opening track is great and the final song is amazing, all 12 minutes of it!

On first listen i like it much more than Sky Blue Sky and Wilco the album.

Opening song is a cracker. They played it on the letterman show.....

They're really at the top of their game and whilst I like it, I'm still left wanting. But thats not necessarily a bad thing. I find pleasure in being able to revisit every Wilco album and never near an 'overplayed' sense with them, within my own listening experience. Its kinda like almost finding something new, everytime you listen to one of their albums. I'd like to see a 4 or 5 year hiatus with them now, which could possibly produce their definitive piece.

I kind of agree, i'd like to see them take a nice break now. Really hope they play Primavera next summer.

I think 'a ghost is born' is their definitive piece! One of my favorite albums of all time!

Had a chance to listen to this album a bit more, and I think it's a belter.

Yep I was thinking the same thing and I feckin love those two albums after they slowly grew on me. The Whole Love seems to be more experimental and less structured than Sky Blue Sky and Wilco the Album.

I was in a trance on the way to work this morning listening to it, tis very impressive.

So far I agree with the above but i think/feel Wilco have one huge album left in them.

If i could hear one song again for the first time it would be At least that what's... from Ghost. Just for when the guitar cuts in the first time. Magic.

I just realised they have a new album out, how did i miss that, listening to it for the first time now, so far so good.

Was actually wondering what you'd make of it. Let us know when you've listened to it a bit!

Like most people have said so far; it's a grower album. A few listens are needed to let the listener find the band's intentions. 'Art of Almost' is an album opening stomper - a signal of intent that on first listen to the remainder of the album leaves you a bit puzzled. Successive listenings pay off greatly though. I wasn't too impressed hearing 'I might' in isolation when released before the album, but again the context of the album gives it better meaning and therefore on my part better appreciation. The beautiful pace of 'One Sunday Morning' with it's sadness is standout and I'm sure will become a live classic.
Is it their best album - hopefully not yet; is it their best so far - YHF still gets my vote on that one; is it the best release this year - so far (Big Tom Waits has yet to give us his latest offering!)

Picked up my copy of it in Tower about two weeks ago now. Rarely been off the player since.

I think it's got everything! One Sunday Morning has more depth than most other groups could even attempt. It is a true work of art.

I dont really know what to do with this, but ive wrote it, so i might as well put it here.

Im at that age now where i can't or don't want to keep up with every new band on the horizon. I don't have the same time to devote to listening to music as i used to. Maybe music doesnt mean that much to me anymore. Im older (not that old), i'm married, i'm setttled and generally happy in life. So after a week of listening to this album in the car on the way to work i had settled on the opinion of 'decent enough, couple of stand outs, some filler. It's no a ghost is born. Looking forward to the live shows.' but then, ive been a wilco fan for years, this is one band who i will probably always have an interest in following as long as they keep releasing material. And so ive gone back to it.

Wilco are the kind of band who deserve your time. At least my time anyway. I wish i had a small room that had just enough room for a single bed, a couple of posters on the walls and a record player to listen to this album. But i dont. So a discman and some headphones has to do.

I was wrong with my initial review. This is another great output. I wont go through every song giving it a couple of lines summary. Art of Almost is unlike anything any Wilco incarnation has produced before. It is a dark, groovy, electronic awesome piece of music. I love the bassline. Basslines. And then it changes into something that scares the crap out of the cat.

And then the album closes with a 12 minute acoustic driven song that seems to fly by. I dont know how many times the main 2 riffs get played in those 12 mintues, but i never want them to end.

Along the way there are those initial stand out tracks, Dawn on Me, Born Alone, Whole Love. But going back with the headphones, every song has something going on in it. There must have been some beatles albums lying about when these songs were written and recorded. Sunloath sounds like it has come straight from Abbey Road. Listen to those lead guitar fills & backing harmonies after 2 & ½ minutes. Capitol City could have been written by Paul McCartney. (i love paul mccartney so that is supposed to be a compliment.)

Initially the lyrics weren't connecting with me. They seemed too distant. Either they were impersonal, or just too much like poems. But as usual, there is a lot of humanity, and Jeff Tweedy in there. And i hope i know when to show you my whole love.

I think this is an album that benefits from be regarded as having a side A and B. Taking a break between the two is no bad thing. Ending side A with Born Alone is worth trying out. Then have a little rest before easing yourself back in with Open Mind.

My last point to make is how well recorded this is. Every song has multiple instruments, playing different notes and different sounds, but everything is crystal clear. It sounds really good. Really really good.

    I love Wilco. Unashamedly.

according to their Facebook page they cant get a date for Ireland next Spring but say they will be here at some stage next year.

The only thing i saw on their FB page was this:

we'll get to Dublin soon, for sure. Just haven't been able to get venues/dates as needed thus far.

I still think they'll be here next Spring. Unless i missed another comment saying otherwise.

Lucky you getting to hear YHF for the first time - still my favorite. For a real treat after that you should watch 'I am trying to break your heart' the movie about the making of and near breaking of the album.

Really like this album and band and they are awesome live. The last song is especially stunning.

Thankfully I get to see them live next week (and they say emigration is a bad thing - fools):D

Got the album last week and have it on rotation since, great album. Only heard Yankee Foxtrot Hotel before this so does anyone have any recommendations on which album to buy next?

I started with Summerteeth, loved it, bought all their albums since and also bought their earlier 2 albums. A Ghost is Born can be challenging in parts but worth it. I think Summerteeth and A Ghost is Born is your best bet. And if you get the chance to see them live do.
