Golf TSI

    All,

Currently at looking at upgrading from a MK4 Golf TDI (90BHP) to a 2008 model.

Had been considering the TDI models with a preference for the 2.0 GT TDI for performance.

I am now considering a 1.4 TSI model, due to comparable performance to the 2.0 diesel.

I am based in Dublin, with the majority of my driving now being city based.
Most weekends I have a 200 mile roundtrip to the country - but during the week it is 30-50 miles of city and m50 driving.

Really just looking for a sense of what you might think makes more economical sense based on my driving.

    Cheers in advance for feedback.

There are a few 1.4 TSI's, there's a 122, 140 and a 170... I've close to home experience with a 122bhp and it's a great engine, nice bit of pull where's it needed and fairly soft on juice with the six gears :)

Cheers. Would ideally look to the 140 bhp.
How would you rate them on efficiency based on the driving i am currently doing. Probably Clocking up 13k miles p.a.

I had a 2007 Golf GT TSI 170 PS petrol manual, it gives you 1.4 economy (>40 mpg) if you go easy on the gas but if you get a bit aggressive with the right foot and get the turbo needle moving, it really shifts. A great car.

Be careful if you're buying a 2008 model because for that car (low c.c./high bhp) there will probably be a huge difference in the annual tax between first half 08 and second half 08 models.

You do 13k miles a year just around the city? Maybe a smaller diesel might be a good option for you, something like a 1.4 Corolla or a 1.4 Peugeot 206 HDI?

If you're set on the Golf and doing that kinda mileage I'd be somewhat inclined to head in the direction of a TDI.

I had one loved it but it was a lemon and based on my poor experiences from that I wouldn't touch one again.

Plenty of poke in it but if you use that poke it will eat fuel.

Probably hitting the 13,000 miles when you factor in the commute down the country at weekends. May be coming in slightly less than this, but overall that would be my rough estimate.

Have done 75,000 miles over the last 5.5 years on my current car.

Wouldnt go any smaller than the Golf, want some comfort for the occasional longer drive.

Don't bother buying anything smaller than a golf down the country for the weekends! A supermini with a diesel engine is not a great option for what your doing.
You've already decided you want a TSi golf which is the right decision! Keep the revs low around town and you still wont burn a petrol hole in your pocket - and it's cheaper to tax and maintain than a diesel!

    Hi OP,

I am currently driving an 08 140bhp petrol model and love it to bits. Will have had it 2 years in November and I havent had an ounce of trouble with it outside the usual changing tyres and servicing.

It's not too bad on the gas at all, around town its ~6.8-7.0 l/100km but on a decent run this figure can dip down to 5.4-5.6 l/100km.

Considering changing it though for personal reasons but I couldnt recommend it enough.

    Tax is 300 per year.

333 to be exact, that's under the c.c. basis of assessment which applies up to mid 08.

Hmmm. I won't be popular for this idea but feck it, here it goes:

Small engine+2 different forced inductions= complicated and does not look very reliable.

I might be wrong, but I would be fan of that.

The technology has been around for several years now, why don't you base your assessment on actual data rather than bald prejudice just because you think the technology is 'complicated'.

The statement you made could be equally said of any machine that combines different technologies such as hybrid cars and washer/dryers, bit of a Luddite attitude if you ask me.

I have read on various forums that the 1.4 170 has a few reliability issues. Its a bit much HP for a 1.4 imho. Allthough the other HP variants all seem to be reliable.

    Edit... 6000 posts... Yaaaaaayyyyyy

    Congrats on the 6,000 posts.

A 'few' reliability issues you say for the 1.4 170 TSI engine. Well if you read the threads on this forum, every time someone says they're thinking of buying model 'x', someone pops up and tosses in a negative comment so there's always a naysayer no matter what model or engine you care to mention.

AFAIK it's generally accepted that the 170bhp version of the engine has issues.

People are merely pointing out an issue with a certain variant of the engine. If nobody let the OP know about this stuff and they bought one and then came back complaining what do you reckon they would think of the 'advice' given.

Now get off your horse before you hurt yourself.

I don't think the OP will come back here chasing a loads of anonymous usernames for advice given on buying a car... I think some people get a little overexcited with regards just how important the motors forum is in society!

And I wouldnt mind if it was advice, seems to have been a case of someone trying to put OP of with a completely unsupported, opinion based statement.

I owned a 170 PS version of the Golf GT TSI for 4 years and never had a minute's problem with it.

Pardon me while I remount my high horse.

You say that 'it's generally accepted that the 170bhp version of the engine has issues.' without saying what specific issues have arisen.

Please be my guest and tell us exactly what issues you're talking about, otherwise get off your high horse.

    thank you.

so " oh my, my guess and opinion wasnt that far off...."

its good to hear bouth opinions, bad and good. thats why people still use motor forums. If everyone would just say how amazing stuff is and it would end up ****, then no one would take a word seriuosly in here.

This might be of no use but i have a Seat Leon 1.4 Tsi 123bhp, I know you said golf but they are all under the same umbrella.

I personally love the car & engin, it has great poke for the size, and if you drive it rite as in not with a heavy right foot it doesn't cost too much on petrol

Haven't got exact figures on the fule consumption but on average when I do check, half a tank will do me anywhere between 320-350. Thats both city driving and a few trips on the M50.

Overall running costs arn't too high just the usual servicing and all the general up keep.

    Hope this helps:)

Thanks for all the feedback lads. Leaning towards the TDI to be honest.
Think it will be easier on the pocket in the long run.

What do you think of this:

Anybody had any dealings with this garage?

    Thanks
