    Hello,
I'm a hDip (or PGDE as they insist we call it now!) student with a first year English class. They're all of pretty decent standard, and seem relatively interested in what we've done so far. I'm searching for texts that will fulfill the syllabus requirements, whilst also stimulating them. The recommended texts on the syllabus are the ones I studied in Junior Cycle (quite a while ago now!), and most are about as interesting as watching paint dry. Even the new anthologies are laden with quite uninspiring works. We went through one particular short story last week, and while it was effective in introducing them to key concepts and ideas, it wasn't as effective in grabbing their attention. So I'm looking for any recommendations- not just on novels either, but on short stories, plays, and poems. Any suggestions appreciated.

Oh, and it's a class of girls.

    Thanks!

Ps. Doing a heroes and heroines unit next, so any short story or poetry suggestions on that theme appreciated.

The standard text at the moment seems to be 'The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas', but you may find that a lot of them will have read it in primary. Most of the teachers in my school do 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime' with first years, and they really seem to enjoy it.
