I'm reading this off politics.ie. The Late Late will host the first presidential debate next Friday (Sept 30). It's not clear if the whole two hours will be devoted to the debate (I suspect it may be).

I believe that having this debate on the LLS and not Prime Time trivilises the office. I also don't think Tubridy is up for it either.

Edit: Apparently there is some confusion over who's hosting the first debate on RTE. The Frontline team had said they had first rights to the debate! Sounds like an internal rift there between the LLS and the Frontline!

According to thejournal.ie Vincent Browne is hosting a debate on TV3 on 4 October.

David Cochrane (politics.ie founder) has just tweeted that RTE have told Tubridy that Pat Kenny & Frontline are to host the first Presidential candidates' debate.

    !

Pretty sure there was a Late Late debate back in 97. I remember Mary McAleese reeling off her degrees and languages etc. and stunning a few of her rivals who had little academic background in comparison.

Adi Roche won the popular vote IIRC. While she was robotic and full of cliches that debate brought McAleese into frame and brought her strong transfers to give her the win.

There was a debate on the LLS for the 1990 election too. That seems like a different era to now.

There was a debate both in 1997 and 1990 on The Late Late... I hear that they are still on track to host first debate as it was all okayed by the powers that be. Reports on politics.ie appear to be inaccurate.
