Don't bother with the SNES version, it's been cut and had content removed from it.

You are better off playing the anniversary edition which you can get from GoG. It's aged quite a bit and the trial and error gameplay really grates but it's a very interesting game and I think really worth playing, although a faq might be needed for some of the stupider puzzles.

Didn't know this was available from GoG :)

Will try to get this at some stage then, it really is other-worldly.

It's amazing how it's equally so dated and so far ahead of it's time. Still a great piece of storytelling.

Love that game, it is a memory test though.
Heart of the Alien, on the MegaCD is a quasi sequel, a side story exploring the times when the alien and Lester were separated in Another World, mixed with flashbacks and flash forwards.
Flashback is sublime, much less of a memory test, an action movie on screen, beautiful looking, lush colours with a palette that changes depending on the setting of the level.
And the sequel to that game, Fade to Black, another very good game imho but, due to the decision to use full 3D visuals this time, has aged more than its progenitor.
That said it captures all the ambiance of Flashback and concludes the story quite well.
I firstly owned the PC version on release and loved it, the PS version too and that had enhanced textures, looking even better.
Well worth finding if you are a fan of the series.
If love these games and a completist, it is worth getting the GBA version of Flashback, available for download only as it was finished but never released.
It is perfectly playable via emu and, even better, on a flashcart which is how I have played it.

It's out on iOS this month I think?

    Flashback or Another World?

I wouldn't fancy some of the more precise jumps from Flashback on an iOS device...

Here's a great talk Eric Chahi gave about the making of Another World:

Most of the jumps in Flashback were automatic, but the one when you're being chased by the pillar of energy might be difficult alright.

There's one what I think is the second screen of level 2 that required ridiculous timing to get right.

I feel kinda bad for Eric Chahi, his reputation was pretty much built on pushing the 16 bit systems, then lost it when the next generation came along. I really didnt like heart of darkness.

They've been a pretty hit and miss company. They might be responsible for Another World and Flashback, but they also made Fade to black and *gasp* Shaq fu!

Fade to Black is a product of it's time though. When it came out on PC it was mind blowing and I had a lot of fun with it. It was probably the most advanced game at the time. When it came to PS1 is was already horribly dated. I defeinitely wouldn't be able to go back to it.

They really did go downhill. Time Commando was a pretty awful game by them.

I quite enjoyed Heart of Darkness when it came out... they probably built up the 3D aspect a bit too much though.

Would love to play it again and see how it plays now.

Well, I liked Fade to Black, and there wasn't a gulf of time between the PC and PS versions, less than a year.
Fade to Black on the PS had pretty good, for the time, shading and textures.
I really enjoyed it on both formats too.
Of course, it does not stand up as well as Flashback but it is worth playing as an official continuation of the Flashback story line.

What do people think of their earlier stuff?

Cruise for a Corpse is amazing. Really loved that game.

Operation Stealth and Future Wars are great too, but can be really tough.

Not a big gulf in time but there was a huge technological jump since the first graphics hardware accelerators were released and had become popular.
