    Hi,

Ive just starting circuit training which is on three nights a week. One night down. I also do a zumba class which has just started back again last night, I was sore after the circuit training in muscles i didnt know I had but much worse today! Can barely walk! Circuit training is on again tonight but should I take a break and allow my body to recover or go tonight and work through the pain?!

I have gone from doing very little over the summer to this so I knew I would hurt a little but don't know what is best!

    Thanks!

Take a break for tonight at least. See how you feel tomorrow.

You went from doing nothing to this so give your body time to adapt. Rest yo' self!

Go again. It'll be tough but your body will slowly and surely adapt to the stresses. If you skip tonight, Friday will hit and it'll be a little harder to go... and if you skip Friday, it'll get into a bad cycle.

Just bite the bullet. Also, foam rolling and a little stretching will work wonders, and make sure you're eating decently and drinking enough water to recover from each session.

Thanks for the quick replies! I am enjoying it when I do it so dont know if I'll get into the habit of skipping it I'm just worried that I'll injure myself!

Yeah I highly recommend resting. You seem to have no signs of quitting since you enjoy it. If you were to overdo it and injure yourself you might be out for a while and find it hard to start back up again. You said you can barely walk etc. at the moment so I would definetly rest being that you went from doing nothing to doing this. Ease yourself in to the routine otherwise you might find it harder to adhere to it when you become injured/fatigued and also overdoing it can run the risk of mood swings and all sorts!

One session down and wimp has appeared. Get your butt down to that session tonight. For gods sake look again at what you have written, ok?

Anytime you do a new activity you will experience soreness. (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness or DOMS)
The best way to counteract that soreness, is activity.

Were I in your boots. I would go to the class.
You will not get injured from DOMS and you are unlikely to suffer from chronic fatigue from few classes. Just make sure you warm up.

Pretty soon you won't be so sore.
    Good job.

She could certainly pull a muscle. Just saying. It's on 3 nights per week. If she goes 3 times this week, next week and the week after it will soon catch up where she will associate too much pain with going and runs the risk of dropping out after approximately 4 weeks. It's always better to ease the body into something new if you want to adhere to the change, rather than go full steam. Something will eventually give if you go full steam.

Dont pay attention to anyone who is calling you a wimp. (very unhelpful, btw headmaster) Listen to your own body. If you go, will you get value from the class or will you struggle to do the moves? Yes, a session of activity can help with doms, but not necessarily the same activity at the same intensity.

I would also be concerned that if you hit this hard, 3 nights a week, you will get fed up with that level of work and drop out, as it will seem like too much effort after a few weeks. Far better to be moderate and consistent at first. It should not be a chore.

She could do that any day of the week.

You could pull a muscle with or without DOMS.

I don't know where you are getting that stuff from, but it seems to be hinged on the idea that the human body doesn't adapt to imposed demands. Which would make it absolute nonsense.

DOMS will stop after a few sessions.
And then your 4 weeks hypothesis will be debunked.

Imposed demands in this particular scenario with the OP will soon turn into a chore as Oryx has said! DOMS shouldn't ideally be done with the same exercise at the same intensity also as Oryx has said. The OP is a beginner. Read what she said instead of trying pick apart what I said.

Where did I get it from? Experience training myself and others :)

    Definately go tonight.
Wednesday DOMS are a bastard when starting something new on a Monday.

Go to the session, tell the instructor your problem and do as much as you can!

You will not feel good about yourself if you skip this session.

But if you go and do what you able to do, you will fell great!

Wait, you lead someone to fatigue that was sufficiently bad to cause mood swings and quit?

I did read what she said and I gave my opinion.
Beginners can do hard stuff and in fact can recover more quickly to imposed demands than more advanced trainees. Now you implied that she was at some risk of some sort chronic fatigue after 4 weeks.
That is disingenuous and alarmist. We don't need horror stories.

In my experience, one can train with DOMS and it helps alleviate DOMS.
OP did you do the Zumba Class last night?

    No. That's a childish comment.

    No. That's a childish comment.

    It isn't.
You have stated in your argument that she will arrive at a position where she suffers from mood swings and will burn out.
And that you know this from experience of training others.

It is a perfectly valid comment.
Frankly, your levelling accusations of childishness at everyone who disagrees with you is childish. And unhelpful.

You've taken what I've said out of context to suit your argument against me just because I disagreed with you. I'm here to help the OP not argue with childish mentality.

OP I've given you my advice and it comes from experience. Hope it helps you. PM me if you have any other questions.

    I haven't.
The context is should someone continue to train an activity despite having DOMS.

I have taken your comments entirely within the context they were made.

Are you gonna accuse everyone who disagrees with you of being childish and then take your ball and go home?

d'Oracle I can see where you're coming from but let's consider things objectively for a second.

OP is a girl (and by admission hasnt' done much by way of exercise in the last few months so won't know what DOMS is much less how to combat it).

The OP has also said they're doing circuit training on Monday and a Zumba class on Tuesday followed by another (possible) circuit class tonight. It's something we see time after time - all the best intentions of getting fit, gives it socks for the first few days then bang, motivation is lost and they never see the inside of a gym again.

So, physiologically sure, the DOMS would be gotten rid of pretty fast if she went for another training session BUT it would hurt like hell in the process.

OP Oryx had it bang on - listen to your body, if it's really sore then take it handy tonight BUT make sure you make up for it later in the week. Ideally go for a brisk 30-45 minute walk tonight, that'll help alleviate discomfort. And don't think that you need to go hell for leather and train every day, start out with 3-4 sessions a week and build on it if needed :)

Also ImGettinPaper and d'Oracle take the flirting to PM. You'll take someone's eyes out with all the e-penis waving.

Admittedly, I was taking it as she had not done the zumba class.

As far as the wimp comment goes, I wouldnt be considering going back if I was!!I read what I wrote and dont see the problem! I have never done weights before or this type of training so and bad timing that all the classes started the one week so I dont have time to ease myself in!

Thanks to everybody else! I'lll just go tonight and see what the instructor says! No pain no gain I suppose!

Hey, Im the same as the OP I started a Bootcamp type class 3 weeks ago and it was also 3 days a week! At first I was in agony after the first 2-3 classes cudnt even walk down or up the stairs properly...but then I just got used to it and now it barely hurts as much. So give the class a go tonite and just do what you can like even if you dont go full wack at it then least your tried:p Best of Luck:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,122 ✭✭✭✭Jimmy Bottlehead

Fair play, OP. Go kick ass tonight :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,518 ✭✭✭krankykitty

Go for it OP and best of luck :)

I find if you really don't feel you can do the class again, if you go for a good walk/easy jog you'll find the pains will go away and you'll be right as rain for the next day. I was in the same position once when I started pilates and circuit training the same week, the pain!

The day will come when doms makes you smile because you've worked hard, and when you don't get it you think you didn't put in enough effort. :)
