It is war of the roses at Elland Road on Tuesday night as Leeds United host Manchester United in the third round of the Carling Cup.

The meeting between the duo is United's first chance to avenge their stunning FA Cup exit to the Whites in January 2010.

Leeds are seeking their first success over the Red Devils on home soil since September 2002 when Harry Kewell netted the winner.

Sir Alex Ferguson's troops have a good record across the Pennines having won five of their last 10 visits to Elland Road.

    Red Devils news

The visitors are likely to ring the changes following Sunday's 3-1 Premier League success over title rivals Chelsea.

Former England international Michael Owen is expected to start in place of Wayne Rooney, who has been in blistering form this season.

Ex-Liverpool man Owen has not played at Leeds since February 2004 when the Reds claimed a 2-2 draw in West Yorkshire.

It would be Owen's first appearance of the season and he could be joined by prospect Paul Pogba on Tuesday night.

Pogba, who was controversially picked up from Le Havre at the age of 16, has already made a huge impression during the club's FA Youth Cup success last season.

The teenager is one of a number of youngsters included in Ferguson's squad along with Tom Thorpe, Ezekiel Fryers, Larnell Cole and the Keane twins Will and Michael.

The visitors are likely to have plenty of experience on show with Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs set to play as neither started against The Blues.

    Leeds news

Leeds boss Simon Grayson must decide whether to give some of his key players a rest ahead of Friday's crucial Championship trip to Brighton.

The Whites have returned to form after wins over Crystal Palace and Bristol City, although Grayson does not have the wealth of riches that Ferguson can afford.

Defender Patrick Kisnorbo is suspended following his red card against The Robins so Tom Lees could revert to centre back with Paul Connolly filling in at right back.

Argentine striker Luciano Becchio is pushing for his first start since April after recovering from a hamstring complaint.

Becchio has started the last two matches on the bench due to the form of forward pairing Andy Keogh and Ross McCormack, while two other strikers, Billy Paynter and Mikael Forssell, are also hoping to feature.

Really looking forward to this, can't wait to see more of Pogba, hopefully he starts!

Hopefully a repeat of January 3rd

Our main man Ross McCormack is scoring for fun, and with a fit again Luciano Becchio back in the fold, I fancy goals

    3-2 to the real United

    Can't ****ing wait for this.

I'd love to just put out our first team and destroy them. However beating them with a youth team would be even sweeter!

no....have no idea who he is, somebody else sits in that seat for the past season and a half, he was probably only there as a once off.

    That had some class too.

Strange to think only 2 of our starting XI then could play today.

Paddy Power are offering odds on Eikrem to score tonight lol . They're a joke

I don't see why any UTD fan would be too confident going into this, if we play away at Leeds like we did against Benfica then I'd be very worried!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,235 ✭✭✭✭flahavaj

Will be a tough game in a red hot atmosphere. I expect to see the Pog line up wide right, with Giggs and Carrick in the middle and Prk on the left. Defence picks itself. Depending on the fitness of others Berba may be needed for the PL in the next few weeks, otherwise it'll be he and Owen up front. SSN reported Gibson as being in line to play tonight but I think thats wrong?

Come on the Super Leeds , Oh how i would love a repeat of that crisp new years morning in 2010 !!

Hopefully we dont bottle it in front of a sold out elland road like we usually do!!

    Lonergan
    Lees-Bromby-O'Dea-White
    Snodgrass-Clayton-Howson-McCormack
    Becchio-Keogh

Rachubka, O'Brien, Taylor, Brown, Vayrynen, Nunez, Forssell

Dissapointed to not see Connolly involved. Lees could be exposed today.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 178 ✭✭DirtyLeeds

Hopefully it's Keogh wide on the left and not McCormack

We should NOT be in a position where our main man is forced out wide

    Thom Kirwin
    @Thomkirwin Thom Kirwin
Owen, Berbatov, Giggs, park, carsick, da Silva, Valencia, Diouf, fryers, Amos, Macheda. Man u team tonight.

    Rumoured line up:

Cant wait to see how we line out, seems very unbalanced team.

Subs: De Gea, Welbeck, RBrown, MKeane, Thorpe, Pogba, Cole

    Good old 4 2 4 formation :pac:

    please no

Coming from numerous sources now. I wouldn't know where to start.:pac:

Hilarious team. No centre backs, four strikers. Leeds have to be favourites now.

    What odds are they?

    I can't see that line out being as successful as the 7 - 1 - 2. :(

    I presume;

    Amos

    Valencia
    Carrick
    Fryers
    Fabio

    Diouf
    Park
    Giggs
    Macheda

    Berbatov
    Owen

    What a strange team.

lol, who the fúck is Fryers? haha

That's literally the most bizarre UTD line up ever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,872 ✭✭✭✭dahat

Had a fiver on Fabio to score first,20/1...

Looking at that team my earlier fears are confirmed, fear the worst tonight...

    EDIT..........5/1 LEEDS.......could be a good bet!

Baptism of fire for Ezekiel Fryers although he has been doing well in reserves I think.

    Still...jaysus! :pac:

lol, who the fúck is Fryers? haha

    He is a CB. :)

Hes done well for the reserves from what I've seen this season but still wouldn't have expected him to start.

Had a hunch Pogba wouldn't start. Unless Fergie says the word "starting" you can never be sure.

    What a strange team.

    Presumably that.

The only explanation is that Fergie doidn't want to play Jones and Evans 48 hours after the Chelsea game? I thought Fryers was a left back anyway?

If they get an early goal it could be a long night.
