The engine is gone on the gf golf, anybody know of an engine for sale in the munster/cork area, my mechanic was trying all day yesterday but is having no joy.

Anybody know any place that might have one or any contacts would be appreicated.

They are a very troublesome engine and so its very hard to find decent ones. Most peoples only option is to get limiting your search to your local area and look country wide, incuding the north.

Mine went two years ago. The bank wouldn't give me a loan to trade up so I ended up having the work done, engine reconditioned and all the other bits and pieces that were affected. Been going fine ever since oddly enough.

Bob Sweeney's scrapyard out by Killaloe might be a good call for you. They usually have quite a few of those engines about. I had the same car before and got a few bits from there.

What sort of money did you shell out for that rebuild? PM if you don't want to post.

If you are getting a rebuild (which if you are keeping the car is the best option), make sure you get someone who knows the 1.4 engine to do it. And make sure they do the valve oil seals etc.

There are no specialist systems in the golf 1.4 engine so specific knowalage isn't required.

All wearable items should be checked/replaced when doing a proper rebuild so the like of valve stem seals would be very basic stuff.

The problem you'd have depends on how much wear is on the engine. If it needs lots of machine work to bring everything back into spec it could end up costing more then the a 00 golf would be worth.

Sounds like basic stuff alright, but I got a head done on a Golf before and the fools who did it didn't do the seals, so I'm just telling the OP to make sure they're done.

How difficult to transplant a 1.6l petrol unit into this car?

The vast majority of 1.6 vag engines in the irish market are 8v units meaning that all external componants such as wireing loom, ecu etc etc would be different.
