Hard Drive Issue - Thought provoking !

I have a 1TB Iomega Hard Drive. I always use it with my PS3 and watch movies/tv shows (most notably The Wire) on it.

However I moved house and the PS3 is no longer recognising the Hard Drive.

I bring it to a laptop shop and they say its working perfectly and the hard drive is recognised as soon as they plug it into the usb port.

It works perfectly in my old house.

I have moved to an apt and it is not working. I don't understand why. And the funny thing is, it didn\'t work in my friends apts either when I would bring it over to their places ages ago too

It is in perfect working order. The light still comes on. Everything is the same except the PS3 does not recognise it now.

I would consider myself technologically sound but is it even possible that it only works in houses and not in apartment buildings? That’s the best I can come with.

There is absolutely no issue except for the fact that the hard drive is not being recognised bythe PS3.

Its thought provoking and I was hoping I could pick BOARDS brains. Its already been formatted. I am completely stumped.

    I miss Omar / Stringer Bell !

    Thanks,

    Dave

The only thing I could possibly think is that there is a slight difference in power that is being given in an apartment block than that given in a house.
The light being on does not necessarily signify that the drive has enough power to spin, only that the controller has power.

I am no electrician though, so this may not be the reason, however if it works in two houses, and doesn't work in two apartments then it does lean toward that.

Worst senario would be that you'd need to buy a new ext enclosure for the hard drive.

A strange one, but if it is a power issue as thehomeofDob mentioned and you do not feel comfortable changing the enclosure you should look at picking up a hard drive that is powered through usb, you could transfer files from the first hdd to the second one and it should do the trick nicely.

Of course this would require connecting both hdd's up to a computer which isnt in your apartment, i would say if you bought it off the tech guys you brought it to they would transfer the files across for you.

    Cheers for the help guys.

I actually bought the Hard Drive in Dublin when I was home in June.

I'm thinking though, when I got it checked out in the laptop shop it was working. This was after it didn’t work in everyones apartment.

Then I moved into house and it worked. So maybe if I go back to laptop shop and it works again, it may work in my apt. maybe their store or them getting it working triggers something?

Why has my god forsaken me - Damn thy Omar. Why has thy forsaken me in depths of my season 2 docks despair !!!!!

Sounds like it could very well be dirty power. Irish apartments have some of the filthiest power I've ever seen - it actually puts automatic voltage regulators to work, and usually those are just a gimmick to get people buying useless crap at radio shack. But in a carlow apartment my 1st laptop charger got ****ed, a 2nd one got ****ed, and whenever it was plugged in my speakers - when not even connected to the laptop put on the same wall outlet - would make regular static/background noise that changed whenever I moved my mouse, among other things. That's not even getting me started on the electrocution from the metal contact on my headphone jack.

haha. Thanks man but i'm living in Melbourne and the place is REALLY clean :)

My new train of thought is that I didn't disconnect the hardward correctly, I just unplugged it from the USB port so I am now hoping that that is the issue.

Gotta keep thinking outside the box. I know its something so simple.

could still be a dirty power grid in the building though. for similar reasons Powerline Ethernet Adapters are not reccomended for use in multiplex housing situations.

It's very, very unlikely to be a problem with the power in your apartment.

How do you know the hard-drive is in 'perfect working order'. Is it working with your computer?

Is it formatted using FAT32 and not NTFS?

Have you run a quick disk check on it (in Windows go to My Computer, right-click the drive, tools > error checking)

Do other hard-drives work with the PS3?

I would have thought the USB port would have regulated the power before sending it onto the hard drive.

There isn't any security on the hard drive? Maybe when it's connected up to a different device at a different IP address it thinks it's been stolen?

I'd assume the problem is with the PS3 as that has more changeable settings than the hard drive.

I've seen this issue in 3 apts.
The problem in all 3 was the same - the apts. were thrown together very quickly and the electrical contracter didn't tighten the mains connection to the sockets. This caused an intermittent connection which blew many appliances.

And I'd have assumed the power transformer on my laptop PSU would regulate the power before my laptop tried to electrocute me, but it didn't.

The PS3 and Laptop do not recognise the hard drive. Therein lies the problem.

It is formatted using FAT32. Hard Drive is in perfect working order because when I brought it to the shop it worked perfect for them, when I was in my old house, it worked perfect. The issue is 100% the lack of recognition. The hard drive is not recognised on any of my friends laptops, on the ps3 in anyones apt, but recognised on the ps3 in the house and in the computer at the laptop shop.

If I die, and never figure this out, its the 2nd question I am asking God. ;)
