The 88mpg diesel won't be imported to Ireland AFAIK as there is no road tax benefit here unlike the UK ;)

The one that does 88mpg also has a top speed of 2.

Can't see how you'd be smitten, its a pleasant yoke but maybe mpg gets her hot and bothered or she likes a good long warranty

I don't think the 88mpg car is coming here... the 1.1 diesel.

We'll get the paddy spec 1.4 diesel, which is 2 grand more than the petrol version - buy the petrol one!

btw - I think it looks great.

Incidentally I saw an i40 estate too on the road today which looked great. I can't wait for the Kia version

I went to see one in Tralee... was nice, you are right.

But I too think the Kia Optima looks better.

ok Johnos, stop right there:) Explain that in total gobsh1te language please, cos road tax goes right over my head, it's about the last thing I think of when I buy a car. It's also the first thing the wife thinks of. Not available? meh meh meh, soooo Mr Kia, you are setting a challenge for solnskaya then, are you? Heads for ferry bearing cash......

an also-ran car with a great marketing campaign behind it.

The Kia Rio 1.1D is a low emissions car, very low in fact and in certain markets such as the UK it is exempt from road tax or motor tax because of this.

Kia Ireland reckons that it will attract the same emissions based tax rate as the 1.4D, which is cheaper to buy. There will ultimately be a more limited market for it as it will cost more than the 1.4D to buy, cost the same to tax, not be as good to drive but it technically when driven correctly will be more economical.

As much as I think the 88mpg engine is an interesting engine I think Kia has actually made a good decision as there is a cheaper option with the same benefits and also a cheaper petrol engine which makes more sense than any of the diesels unless you are doing big miles.

Why? Because it has a Kia badge on it?

Move with the times, it's a good car

Fiat also made a similar decision not to bring the Fiat 500 Twinair to Ireland incidentally

Our situation is this, we have a shedload of vehicles taxed and insured, mostly related to our business/family(I get to pick up the tax and insurance for a few family members, lucky me:confused:), and basically, it's getting to be a bit of a drag. The missus and me reckon it's time to rationalise(apparently there's some sort of a recession on or somthing:rolleyes:), so we want to get the bill down to three commercials and one economical car to share. She reckons the kia's the way to go, maybe she's right(she usually is), but how practical a car is it? Are they a tiny tin box, or are they day to day usable?

I reckon they are usable but also check out the Kia Venga as it is a smiliar car with more space. The 1.4D is slow but economical.

Personally I'd go for a C'eed estate if you want something economical with space

Thanks Johnos, I will go take a look at the ceed, we have a good kia dealer local to us and I get on well with them, actually after the great maintenance service they have provided on vehicles we bought from other dealers, I would actually quite like to give them the business. Any time I bring a van or car in, they are very good to deal with-part of the reason I agree with the OH about getting a Kia, really.

Never realised. I thought Fiat opted not to bring it in originally.

I thought so too... the usual "delete the best model from range" paddy import policy! ;)

1.1d is cheaper to buy than the 1.4d in the UK

1.1 CRDi New Rio '1 EcoDynamics' £9,370.83 (no air con in this version)
1.1 CRDi New Rio '1 AIR EcoDynamics' £10,037.50 (has air con but not as economical due to a higher final drive ratio)
1.1 CRDi New Rio '2 EcoDynamics' £10,954.17 (as above)
    1.4 CRDi New Rio '2 EcoDynamics' £11,287.50

Here all the above cars are in the same VRT band and I don't think there is any purchase price incentive (eg reduced VAT) in the UK for <100 g/km vehicles. So I don't see why the 1.1 couldn't be cheaper here too. Cheaper and more economical - 88 mpg vs 70 mpg.

While the 1.1 is a slow car, so is the 1.4 and many people don't give a crap about this aspect of a car anyway and also don't give a crap about the lack of aircon.

I have discussed this car with a few people and they hadn't heard of it but were interested in it. Some of them drive 40k+ kms per year. The mindset in this country these days is pessimistic and deflationary while at the same time people are worried about fuel prices. IMO, KIA could have a field day advertising an 88 mpg car.

Yes, the 1.1d is road tax exempt and congestion charge exempt in the UK whereas here there is no congestion charge and motor tax is the same if a car is 120 g/km or 20 g/km. Is the lack of these incentives here such a big deal that Kia and other manufacturers won't bring in their <100 g/km cars

    Yes, of course.

^^^ good post. I agree maybe sub 99g/km cars should have a reduced VRT like hybrids - which in many cases are not sub 99g/km or particularly economical.

From the picture Bigus posted above, it looks remarkably similar to a Mazda2.

Your man is happy out driving it too although the only thing that looks totally cack to me is the grille. Apart from that it's a smashing car.
