Heard today that Mayo's Andy Moran broke his leg in a tackle training for the new Aussie rules series.
When will we give up on this nonsense??

He could have done that just as easily playing gaelic football. Are you going to suggest he should give that up too?

I like the International Rules. It's a bit of craic.

Not particularly, but I watch it, and I can understand why players want to play it.

I think those that argue it should be dropped have deeply flawed arguments, and never come up with another potential avenue for the best players to play together.

Railway cup - just like back in the day.

I have been to many railway cup matches. Quite simply, its dead. When you
have players being called up for a province, that have not yet established themselves at county level (I have seen this happen with Connacht), then you know it has lost its allure.

Also, its not easy for players to motivate themselves in front of 50 people on a wet day in McHale Park.

International Rules definitely has the advantage over the railway cup. And anybody that suggests otherwise are still living in the 50's and 60's!

Heard it via a mutual friend and clubmate of his. Injured while kicking a ball while being flung to the ground Aussie rules style. -

You get a trip to Australia, a chance to play for your country and a chance to play in something a bit different, so why wouldn't lads want to play in it? I'm sure they get a few bob in expenses aswell.

For sure, can't see any issue with lad wanting to wear their Country jersey. As well as the free trip! :D

    Best of luck to Andy.

That's a very one dimensional view. Maybe if you had two eyes you'd appreciate it more.

i have been to a few of the matches over the years, even in the 80s when it started and i must say i never really took to it.
but its a trip to oz for the players (lets hope a few of them come back!)

It's a bit much to ask Amateurs to take on Professionals, in any sport.

I'd like to see GAA players paid for these games against the Aussies, because many have to take time off work, particularly if going to Australia.

But the well paid suits in Croke Park wouldn't like to see players being paid..."against the ethos, etc etc"...

They are paid afaik ....the injury I originally posted on was sustained receiving an Aussie rules sling tackle. Players have to be conditioned to taking these tackles over a period of years not weeks and build up their conditioning to it. Is it worth putting our leading players at risk for a makey up game whose main selling point according to this forum is that 'the lads 'get a holiday in Oz every few years!!

Both the Irish and Australian players do enjoy the experience and the fact of representing their country, and it's the only opportunity to do so for both sets of players, and of course there is the travel involved.

For the most part it's harmless enough and there are few serious injuries from it.

Still tough to expect our players to compete with the professionals, and imo the Aussies have far superior footballing skills when it comes to foot passing, hand passing, and fitness levels as well. Our main advantage is probably the use of the round ball.

Its a great achievement to get to play for your country and this is the only format for our footballers to get to represent Ireland
