The difference... quite a number of people have now moved on from being a mod on Boards into the expanding world of Online Reps and Social Networks Managers etc...

While I know you are being lighthearted (and I take no offence per se), the really funny thing is that we probably provide considerably more useful real world experience then JobBridge ever will :)

Im a kiss ass :( Im sorry. I dont mean to be. Sure if anyone says anything against boards I'll defend with in-joke-but-serious-posts. but I like to officially say that I am not really a kiss ass :( because boards is fair.

Im sorry. I just like to go with the flow :( I dont see things for what they are. I Kinda get off when I try to bait another user to get banned. Mainly who doesnt agree with me :( Im not perfect, but boy god do i claim to be. Im just some person who likes to hide behind a keyboard ..... and gosh do I do that well.

But gosh i am a swell person when I leave my keyboard and go into the real world.

    Presumably it's not that different.

Mods are doing work for a company for free, and the vast majority wouldn't end up in a related job, presumably?

As a general rule, if you are involved in the process of making money for a business/company - you should be rewarded financially for doing so. It's a simple concept that has survived the ages. Any deviation from the trend is usually eliminated over time.

Lots of people dont know my involvement with Boards, and I'm totally cool with that. I'm not looking to be Mark Zuckerberg. Boards is what it is and I'm happy I played a part in its creation and growth.

But I do love it when people post like that above... I remember Ecksor posted in Motors correcting some guy's abusive language and got a snotty answer saying
"Why dont you mind your own business" to which Ecksor replied "I am". :)

    Nope.

There used to be some fringe benefits by way of coke and hookers, but since the site got so big all we get is a christmas card with a picture of a naked AH mod each year. :(

Personally, I reckon that counts as punishment, not reward! >.<

Holy fùck...wait 'til they synchronise and you'll have mass bannings every 28 days or so. The current setup is fine, we don't need more wimmens mods.

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

    wow... stay classy Zohan :)

Moderators here are volunteers. Without them we couldnt make this work and there would be no Boards and you would be left to the tender mercies of Eircom or Ryanair to run Ireland's main social network. And if that doesnt scare you I dunno what will...

Well you know I meant as a person employed by the company rather than a consumer who also contributes to profits.

I don't have any problem with moderators, just don't like the way Ireland is heading in general with regard to working for "free" to gain experience. It's a dangerous path to go down.

Would moderators still contribute for free if boards.ie was making €5 million profit every year? ( I know they aren't making that much, just wondering where the line is drawn ).

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

Well when we make profit we'll start to track it hehe...

But I contend your primary point is wrong, people do things for many different reasons. Not all people are motivated by monetary reward.

We're seeing the emergence of social entrepreneurs for example. Many people are rewarded by a feeling of contributing, for seemingly altruistic reasons...

I take your point and when we came up with the idea for community moderation we were never thinking about getting this big. so its grown from there... the vast majority of mods say (and we have asked them) that they want to give something back and build boards so its here for the next generation. Boards will never ever be able to employ 550 people so the choice is either this way, or no Boards at all. I hope most people agree with me that the former is better then silence.

This is why we take great care and pains to show that there ARE social benefits from Boards that the traffic goes both ways on that street. We try to support things like All The Way Round, The Photobook, hell even the football team and cycling teams.

We're very very aware we are indebted to the mods, they know my feelings on that clearly. So, our job... given this unique position that the company finds itself in... is to nuture that trust and to demonstrate that this site is worthy of their gracious time and effort.

    DeV.

They identify themselves, it's strange really when you think about it, they strool into the cop shop with a big rusted badge, rain dropping from a bridge will taint that badge so quick we bounce them on out of here.
    • CoolHat wrote: »

If they are trolling, their post no matter how valid it is, they are not welcome.

That happens, of course it does we are human after all.
    • CoolHat wrote: »

Well we don't delete them, they tend to annoy people who then report them, it's acted on and if necessary, a ban will be issued, and if it happens again and again and that users history tells a story each ban will get longer and longer until they are permanently banned.
    • CoolHat wrote: »
Learn how to delete users you just dont like.
It doesn't happen, mods have to answer to C mods and admin if necessary if a user makes a complaint about their modding.

Could one of the mods block them from my internets?

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

I'll do a Q&A thread if its desired, I've done one in the games forum and one in the poker forum (Both called "In the well" I think). They are actually good fun though AH would scare the pants off me because of the sheer volume of people here.
